Greenwood Leflore Hospital has cleared one major hurdle in completing a transfer of its ownership to another operator.

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees unanimously approved a request from the University of Mississippi Medical Center to take ownership of Greenwood Leflore Hospital, which is situated on approximately 14.5 acres of land on River Road.

In recognition of the Semiquincentennial of America’s Independence on July 4, the Thomas Rodney Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, continues it’s yearlong celebration to honor our patriot ancestors. During the weeks and months leading to America’s 250th Birthday, chapter members are spotlighting the service of our Revolutionary War ancestors. Whether from the sky or hose, water can make or break our gardens. Yet, not to overstate the obvious, it does plants little good to be in a state that gets sixty inches of rain a year, when much of it comes down by the bucketload one day and then we can go two months or more without any at all.

This Sunday marks the first day of summer 2026, along with that the hot temperatures. We have already seen summer-like temperatures in this area this year. Over the years in this column, I have written about severe weather including tornadoes, flooding and other disasters. It is worth noting that extreme heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States, causing more annual fatalities than hurricanes or tornadoes.
