Classical monsters and their concepts have always followed us from their beginnings, from the powerful Universal Classic Monsters with Dracula, Mummy and the Invisible Man, to becoming themes even for younger ages such as “Monster High.” Monsters and their differences have been slowly engrained into our culture and it will continue to follow with every generation having its own iteration.

During the last half of 2025, the new “Frankenstein” film came out and made a new iteration for this decade. “Frankenstein” is a high budget gothic interpretation by acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, starring Oscar Isaac as the scientist Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the monster. Guillermo del Toro is known for his admiration towards the “odd,” directing past films such as “Pan’s Labyrinth” and academy award winner “The Shape of Water” and when the news first came out, it made complete sense for him to be interested in retelling this classic tale.

The final Warrior Gameday Experience of the Fall semester was held on Nov. 15, 2025. The warmer weather meant students at Winona State University and community members all had the opportunity to see the Warriors one last time this year.

Warrior Gameday Experiences, which have been held since August of 2017, occur two hours before every home game for the Warriors. Located on Johnson Street between the Integrated Wellness Center (IWC) and DuFresne Performing Arts Center (DPAC), the experience lets community members and students gather together in support of the Warriors.

Winona State University students who utilize campus dining resources may start to recognize a new face in Jack Kane dining services. Mara Aschliman has been hired as the new campus dietitian, a new role created to support students in managing their dietary needs and can be found running table events, working with students with allergies and helping students balance their nutrition.

College is a big transition for students as they learn to navigate meals on their own. Having a dietitian who is available to work with them is an excellent resource and extremely beneficial in this transitional period. Aschliman is excited about working in a campus setting and hopes to have a positive impact on students’ transformation and adjustments, helping them feel supported.

Political tensions are high throughout the world and it’s no surprise that this is affecting college campuses across the United States. In times like these, many minorities are subject to feeling unsafe or unheard. To combat this, Winona State University’s cultural and identity-based organizations and clubs gathered on Thursday, Nov. 12 to provide a safe space for students to assemble. Their event, an Anti-Colonial Potluck, was intended to inform attendees about the effects that colonialism has on minorities and to share a meal while learning about what can be done to better support one another.

To start off the event, leaders of cultural and identity-based campus organizations introduced themselves and their clubs. Organizations included Black Student Union (BSU), Hmong American Student Association (HASA), PRISM, Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) and Turtle Island Student Organization (TISO). These clubs defined anti-colonialism and gave their definitions of anti-colonial politics. Second year student Perla Ibarra, president of the SOL, explained her club’s definition.

A high school basketball player left the western suburbs of Chicago, Ill. to visit Winona State University. She knew an old teammate who she used to play with came to this place. That teammate was Lindsay Hahn, a former Warrior who put the school on her radar. She traveled to the campus for her first official visit, and it turned out to be her last. After her visit her choice became crystal clear, which set this young athlete on the path to a memorable career for purple and white. With one more chapter of her story to be told, Hailey Markworth begins her final season for the Warriors with goals to aspire to.

As part of Head Coach Anna Wertz’s first recruiting class as a head coach, Markworth grew with the program as time went along. She focused on building her game in practice, competing with the team and bettering herself in the process. She made 25 appearances throughout her rookie collegiate season, earning about five minutes in each contest she appeared in. Her most notable performance touted seven points on 50 percent from the field in only 14 minutes against Wayne State College on Feb. 23, 2021. A game that signified the continued improvement of Markworth game as the seasons went along.

Much uncertainty remains after federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) lapsed due to a government shutdown on Nov 1. While it was confirmed on Nov. 3 that the Trump administration would use a contingency fund to provide partial funding for November benefits, many in Winona and beyond are worried about what this might mean for how they and their families obtain food.

Many people in the Winona community rely on SNAP benefits, commonly known or referred to as food stamps, for basic groceries and nutrition. According to Aurea Osgood, manager of the Warrior Cupboard on campus, there are about 3,100 people receiving SNAP benefits in 1,800 households in Winona County. The assistance they receive could range anywhere from a few dollars a month to up to $800 a month for larger families. With the potential for greater food insecurity, Osgood postulates that food pantries and programs like the Warrior Cupboard will likely experience an upswing in utilization.

"Whenever I am asked to speak to young people, I feel like I am an old elephant who has been asked to speak to young elephants on the subject of how to be an elephant. But there are two problems. First, I know nothing about contemporary young elephant experience. I did not grow up with the internet in my pocket. I do not understand the challenges you face or the joys you share when you Snap each other or BeReal or whatever it is you do… But there is also a second problem with trying to tell you how to be an elephant, which is that I do not know how to be an elephant. What is even happening? Am I in a body, or am I a body? Why is the universe so big? Scratch that. Why is there a universe? …It’s so weird that I think sometimes we must turn away from its weirdness in order to go on, the way cannot stare at the sun for too long without being blinded by its life. So yeah, I don’t know how to be an elephant.”

This excerpt was the introduction of a speech given by world-renowned author and activist John Green on an otherwise generic Thursday evening at Winona State University. Green’s presence was part of the Duran Family Speaker Series; a series of speakers that was founded by Winona State graduate Denis Duran to present events that provide unique cultural enrichment and educational opportunities for campus communities.

Sept. 25, 2025 Winona State University’s Civic Center helped put on a series of events on campus. One of which was the night’s “How Do We Find Community in Our Differences” workshop. This workshop was created through a partnership of the civic center, specifically Elissa Alzate who coordinated the event on the Winona State side, and an organization known as Winona Braver Angels. Braver Angels is an organization that aims to do away with the mass polarization that divides people. They have many workshops that deal with how to have something as simple as an open conversation with someone who may or may not have different beliefs.
