Mike D’s unexpected solo era just got a whole lot bigger. After returning in May with the one-two punch of “Switch Up” and “What We Got,” the former Beastie Boys MC has now officially announced Thank You, the debut album from his new project Mike D 5D.
Due Aug. 28 via Capitol Records, the set marks the first full-length collection of new music from a Beastie Boys member since 2011’s Hot Sauce Committee Part Two and the death of Adam “MCA” Yauch the following year. The announcement arrives alongside the release of the new song “True Colors,” which you can see at the link in the comments.
The 12-song project grew out of a series of low-pressure sessions at Mike’s home studio. What began as collaborations with his sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, gradually expanded to include Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha, Tyran Donaldson and others. The project’s artwork was created with visual collaborators Can Can Press, Thad Higa and Charles Deroyan.
“It’s been so much fun making this music with people I love and I have grown to really appreciate in our collaboration,” says Mike D. “And I just hope it’s fun for others and not overly serious, because let’s be real, I’m releasing this music into a very strange and dark and power-fixated world that really devalues art and feelings and compassion and empathy and equality.”
To premiere the new tunes, Mike D has been playing intimate live dates in unconventional venues backed by 5D, a band that includes his sons. The tour continues Wednesday in Berlin.
