Lethality Starts With the Human

We invest billions making military aircraft faster, smarter, more connected, and more lethal. But there is still a human being inside the aircraft.

That aviator has to process information.

Make decisions.

Manage risk.

Employ the aircraft.

And perform when the mission becomes difficult.

Human performance is not separate from combat capability. It is part of combat capability. Hydration, nutrition, sleep, physical conditioning, fatigue management, and the ability to manage basic physiological needs all contribute to keeping the aviator prepared for the mission.

Technology should help remove unnecessary physiological distractions rather than force aircrew to work around them. The objective is not comfort. The objective is preserving as much human capability as possible when it matters most.

We will continue investing in better aircraft.

We should be equally serious about the person operating them.

Lethality Starts With the Human

We talk constantly about making aircraft more lethal.

Better weapons. Better sensors. Better networks. Better survivability.

But every one of those capabilities ultimately depends on a human being making decisions. Can we make that aviator 1% more focused?

1% less fatigued?

1% less distracted?

1% more physiologically prepared for the mission?

At the margins of human performance, small advantages matter. Hydration alone will not make an aviator lethal. Neither will sleep, nutrition, physical conditioning, or fatigue management. But together, these factors help preserve the cognitive and physical capacity required to employ an increasingly sophisticated weapon system.

Human performance is combat capability.

The question for every innovation we introduce should be simple:

Does this help our aviators fight better?

If the answer is yes, we should pay attention.

You Would Never Intentionally Reduce Aircraft Performance

Imagine accepting an aircraft for a combat mission knowing it would operate below its designed capability.

Less thrust. 🚀

Reduced sensor performance. 🙈

Decreased endurance. 🏃‍♀️

Slower response. 🐢

Nobody would call that acceptable.

Yet aviators have spent decades intentionally dehydrating themselves before missions because bladder relief in the cockpit was difficult or impractical.

Think about that. We optimize fuel. Weapons. Sensors. Tactics. Aircraft configuration. Then we knowingly allow the human operating all of it to begin the mission at a physiological disadvantage.

That is not optimization.

If we can remove an unnecessary physiological burden and allow an aviator to remain hydrated, focused, strapped into the seat, and engaged with the mission, why would we accept anything less?

The aircraft should launch ready.

So should the aviator.

Does It Make the Squadron More Survivable?

Survivability is usually discussed in terms of aircraft. Sensors. Countermeasures. Weapons. Tactics. Protective equipment.

But survivability also depends on the performance of the people operating those systems. A fatigued, dehydrated, distracted, or physiologically stressed aviator is still expected to process information, recognize threats, communicate, make decisions, and execute the mission.

Human performance belongs in the survivability conversation.

Every physiological distraction we can responsibly reduce gives the aviator more capacity to focus on the aircraft, the threat, the crew, and the mission. That is why hydration and bladder relief are not simply quality of life issues. They are part of a much larger human performance equation.

We spend enormous resources protecting the aircraft. We should bring that same determination to protecting the performance of the aviator.

Take care of the human. Strengthen the squadron. Improve the mission.

Does It Make the Aviator More Capable?

That should be one of the questions we ask about every piece of equipment we put into military aviation.

Does it help the aviator perform better?

Hydration, fatigue, cognitive workload, bladder urgency, heat, nutrition, and physical stress all compete for the same human being we expect to operate increasingly complex aircraft in increasingly demanding environments.

The objective of human performance technology should be simple. Reduce the physiological burden placed on the aviator so more capacity remains available for the mission.

If an aviator can remain properly hydrated, reduce unnecessary cockpit distractions, stay focused on the aircraft, and maintain physiological readiness throughout a long mission, we have improved more than comfort.

We have improved capability.

The next generation of military aviation innovation cannot focus exclusively on making aircraft more capable.
We also have to make the human operating the aircraft more capable.

Holding It Is Not a Mission Requirement

Every aviator knows the feeling. You are hours into a mission. You need bladder relief, but the timing is terrible.

So you wait.

Sometimes for hours.

For decades, military aviators have treated this as simply another part of flying. But bladder urgency is more than an inconvenience. It can become another physiological distraction competing for attention during the mission.

And when routinely delaying bladder relief becomes standard operating behavior across years of flying, we should at least question why we continue accepting it.

Modern aviation is built around eliminating unnecessary risk. We improve helmets. Survival equipment. Oxygen systems. Ejection seats. Displays. Restraints. Flight controls. We mandate the use of fire protection, G-suits, and Life Support Systems. We provide the tools for the aviator's success.

We should bring that same mindset to human physiology.

The objective is not simply comfort.

It is allowing aviators to hydrate normally, manage basic physiological needs, remain focused on the aircraft, and finish the mission without intentionally fighting their own bodies.

Holding it should never be part of the mission plan.
