Winston-Salem lost a good one over the weekend. Big Ron Hunter was born in Winston-Salem in 1953. He was often known as the “happiest blues man” in the world. Hunter learned to play guitar from his father, who had been a sharecropper. Hunter had fond memories of growing up with his father playing guitar on the porch, his mother singing and cooking, filling their home with beautiful sounds and delicious smells. Hunter came of age when schools in Winston-Salem were being integrated. He spoke of that experience and how he used his guitar to bring people together, saying that he made lifelong friendships in high school, across lines of race and ethnicity.

As an adult, Hunter spent most of his life only playing music at home, for himself. In the 1980s, he connected with another local man, Guitar Gabriel, who became a friend and mentor to him. Gabriel encouraged Hunter to develop his musical style, which Hunter described as “red-clay-squirrel-scratching blues.” Gabriel was a founding member of the Music Maker Foundation, and connected Hunter with that organization in 2003. Through Music Maker, Hunter was able to perform around the country and the world, and release his own recordings. Big Ron Hunter passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Enjoyed being back behind the console for the final Pops show of the season. Over 60 inputs, 8 monitors, 2 side fills, 5 background singers, and a powerhouse soloist. This was a great show!
