Today in Aviation - 23.06.1942 - First Flight Martin Mars

Originally designed as a long-range maritime patrol flying boat, the Martin Mars was the largest flying boat produced by the Allies. However, developments in technology and changes in naval doctrine saw the aircraft obsolete before it entered service, so the 7 built were repurposed as transports.

When they were retired from military service in 1956, four were converted to water-bombers, and they enjoyed a long career in this role, before finally being retired in 2024. The last two surviving aircraft, Hawaii Mars and Philippine Mars, have happily been retired into museums.

Flying the Amazing N3N Seaplane with Addison Pemberton

On this episode of the Water Flying podcast Steve is joined by Addison Pemberton to discuss his amazing N3N seaplane. This round-engine biplane is the only one of its kind flying on a single mono-float.

The N3N was the primary seaplane trainer for the US Navy from 1936 until 1961. It is a rare example of a military aircraft that was designed and produced by the US government and not an industrial aircraft manufacturer such as Boeing and its Model 75 Stearman. Join Steve and Addison as they discuss the unusual construction and handling characteristics of the N3N.
