Four quick DMX tricks for sucess:

1. Anything over 16 fixtures per universe is too much. Unless you’re using short jumpers and quality fixtures- then up to 32 fixtures before adding an Opto is technically acceptable.

2. Audio XLR is bad.. it carries the wrong impedance and the wrong type of shielding for data signal. That’s why companies sell audio XLR and “3 pin DMX cable”

3. Anything over 300 meters of quality shielded DMX requires an opto splitter to boost signal.

4. Using a fixture as an opto splitter (3 and 5 pin outputs) is a recipe for failure.

5. Dont blame the messenger- I don’t make the rules…technology does 🤷🏼‍♂️

Simply put, do it right and you’ll avoid lots of problems on show sites!

Watch out for so called “AV training classes” that aren’t hosted by a trusted company such as AV educate. Been seeing a lot of people that are new to the industry attempting to host training classes for the industry. Be weary of this, as it takes years to become a seasoned processional.

Before signing up for AV classes, do your homework and be sure your teacher(s) have at least 10 years of successful production experience and aren’t smoke blowers. There’s a lot of smoke out there folks, don’t get caught up in it!
