Introducing Our Winter 2026 Cover!

From her early days illustrating for Hallmark to shaping generations of artists as a beloved teacher, Morgan Samuel Price has spent a lifetime helping others see the world more beautifully.

Her cover painting, It’s All About Old Glory, depicts a charming bungalow near the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens, where vintage Florida architecture meets patriotic pride along with the grounding presence of a grand oak tree.

For Price, landscapes offer serenity—and this one was so inspiring she hopes to revisit it again.

Explore the full story behind the art, the artist, and the philosophy that guides her work in our Winter 2026 issue, hitting mailboxes and newsstands soon.

After being named one of Winter Park Magazine's Most Influential People in 2020, Chris Cortez told us that his philosophy was: “Start with it’s possible and the rest is logistics.” That spirit— combined with a passion for music — guided Chris and his wife, Melody, in securing (against all odds) the former Winter Park Library building for Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, a state-of-the-art performance venue that hosts local, regional and national acts representing all genres. Tragically, Chris died of brain cancer in December, shortly after seeing his dream become a reality. We join the entire community in mourning Chris and supporting Jeff Flowers and the high-powered Blue Bamboo board of directors, who have pledged to keep the music going. “Chris got us started,” says Jeff. “Now it’s up to us.”

Big culinary news this morning in Hannibal Square! Renowned Orlando chef Brandon McGlamery (of Luma, Prato, and Luke’s fame) is partnering with Foundry Hospitality to open The Reverie in the former Chez Vincent space in Fall 2026.

“Winter Park has been my home for over twenty years, and there’s no place I’d rather introduce The Reverie,” said Chef McGlamery.

The concept: a refined yet approachable American brasserie designed with warm textures, thoughtful details, and a cellar-inspired private dining space.

“Partnering with Chef McGlamery allows us to bring a remarkable new concept to Winter Park with a shared commitment to craft and community,” said Brandon Manly, Founder of Foundry Hospitality.

This marks McGlamery’s first fully independent concept in over two decades of shaping Winter Park’s dining scene, and it’s happening right here in Hannibal Square.

We’ll be eagerly watching this one!

This , revisit a festive scene from December 1981 courtesy of the Winter Park Library Archive. Can you imagine a Christmas trolley rolling along Park Avenue, its bell ringing through the holiday shopping season? This project, funded by local merchants, was designed to delight seasonal shoppers while providing transportation from one end of the Avenue to another, the 22-seat "trolly" carried riders from Swoope Avenue to Fairbanks with stops along the way!

Though the trolley has come and gone, the holiday spirit continues on in the twinkling lights and unmistakable holiday bustle that returns to Park Avenue every December. What's your favorite Winter Park holiday tradition?

SOME PIECES
By Billy Collins

I forget who claimed he loved books, he just didn’t like reading them. I feel the same way about chess. And bridge. I used to have my poetry students read the play-by-play annotations in the New York Times bridge column. We had no idea what they meant, but we could tell some kind of struggle was going on. Akin to some poems. I do like chess as a subject or metaphor. In another poem, I wrote about finding a lost chess piece in a park and imagining that a salt shaker had taken its place on the board.

Some Pieces
The knight turns his horse
with invisible reins.

The bishop lifts his robes
and slides across the board.

That the castle budges
at all is impressive.

The unhurried pawn
moves an inch at a time

toward the square
of its sudden removal,

while the king and queen
quietly discuss the ending.

Billy Collins served as a two-term U.S. Poet Laureate (2001–03) and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His most recent book of poems is Water, Water (Random House, 2024), and forthcoming later this year is Dog Show, a collection of his poems about dogs, with watercolors by Pamela Sztybel. “Some Pieces” is a new poem written for Winter Park Magazine.

Despite its founding by progressive New Englanders and its reputation for enlightenment, genteel Winter Park was inexorably part of the Jim Crow South. From privately funded swim clubs created to exclude Black families to the grassroots movement that built the West Side Pool, our city’s waterlines reveal powerful truths about segregation, community, and change.

In this deeply researched piece written by Randy Noles, uncover how civic leaders, local residents, and determined activists shaped access to recreation- and how those decisions still echo in swimming disparities today.

The Park Plaza Hotel, scene of this issue’s fashion feature, epitomizes Old Winter Park.

Built in 1922 by the Orlando & Winter Park Railway as the Hamilton Hotel, it was later renamed the Park Plaza. Today, it's the only hotel on Park Avenue and offers just 28 rooms with all the modern luxuries you’d expect—plus balconies overlooking the city’s signature shopping and dining district or the southern reaches of Central Park with its spectacular rose garden. You can check in, but we guarantee you won’t want to check out.

“For the love of all that is holy, stop backing into parking spaces!”

Writer Greg Dawson has had it with back-in parkers, especially the ones clogging up the Trader Joe’s parking lot. From “Redneck Dave” to “Gigi the ER nurse,” he hit the parking lots of Winter Park to uncover why some drivers swear by it… and others swear at it.

Through the window of Major General John C. Raaen’s suite at The Mayflower at Winter Park, an American flag waves - a fitting tribute to a man who stormed Omaha Beach at 22 and still embodies courage at 103.

Now among the last surviving Army Rangers of World War II, the General has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal - the same honor once bestowed upon George Washington.
