Rich Brahmer knew there was a Lions Club meeting going on last Wednesday night and that they were announcing their citizen of the year. He even joked with his wife that they didn’t choose him again this year, but he was in for a surprise.
Alan Harms had given him a call while he was sitting at the kitchen table saying there was a lady governor of the Lions Club International that was there knew him from way back and that he should come down and say hi. So, he made his way down and as soon as he walked into the VFW where the club was meeting, his family members and a few others yelled “SURPRISE”. “I was completely surprised,” said Brahmer.
Barry Meyer, who filled in for club president Clayton Hoefs, let Brahmer and everyone else know that Brahmer had been chosen as the 2025 Citizen of the Year. Harms then read off a nomination letter sent in that nominated Brahmer for the award.
In the nomination letter it talked about some of contributions to the community that Brahmer has done for Wisner. It mentioned his service on the city council for two stints and serving 12 years on the board of education. It also talked about his time as the current commander of the Wisner VFW Post #5767 and how he’s been able to keep it a viable part of the community. How he’s also kept the tradition of having both a Veterans Day and Memorial Day program to recognize local veterans. The letter also talked about his time in the United States Air Force and serving in Vietnam before being discharged from active duty in 1974 then serving in the reserves for another 11 years.
After all the formalities were done, everyone in attendance enjoyed a nice thanksgiving meal that included turkey, ham, stuffing, green bean casserole, dinner roll and various pie choices.
