One of our favorites!
Michigan is one of the most forested states in the countryโฆ and once you get outside the cities, it shows fast. ๐ฒโ๏ธ
Roughly 55% of the entire state is covered in forest โ thatโs over 20 million acres of trees stretching from the Lower Peninsula all the way through the Upper Peninsula.
And itโs not scatteredโฆ itโs continuous.
Drive north on I-75 or I-131 and eventually the buildings thin outโฆ
then the townsโฆ
then itโs just miles of forest on both sides like you entered a different world. ๐
Weโre talking millions upon millions of trees โ thick pine, hardwoods, mixed forests โ covering huge portions of the state where you can go for hours and barely see development.
Especially โUp Northโ and into the U.P., where the woods donโt just surround the roadโฆ
they own the landscape.
And just like Pennsylvania, a lot of it isnโt public land โ
a big portion is privately owned forest, managed by families, timber companies, and landowners who help maintain and protect it.
Then add in Michiganโs massive system of:
โข State forests (some of the largest east of the Mississippi)
โข National forests like Huron-Manistee and Ottawa
โข Parks, trails, and protected land
โฆand youโve got one of the most heavily wooded, outdoors-driven states in the country.
Itโs easy to think of Detroit, Grand Rapids, or the lakesโฆ
But the reality?
Michigan is still, at its coreโฆ
water and woods. ๐๐ฒ
