Bop's influence on poetry:

Bop was in conflict with The New Poetry which emerges dancing out of the wake of the workshop movement:

-It is not formal, but it is not free or casual.

-As much evolution as resolution. It grew out of after-hours jam sessions.

-The old familiar rhythms are broken up by new ways of perceiving a line.

-Technical aspects of a line are free to interact with rhetorical and syntactical aspects.

-Unexpected intervals and combos which create dissonance. Mostly psychological. Devil's intervals.

How do you come to the new poetry?

It will not come to you.

From Book Business, a book by Jason Epstein:

"During this time book publishing has deviated from its true nature by assuming, under duress from unfavorable market conditions and the misconceptions of remote managers, the posture of a conventional business. This has led to many difficulties, for book publishing is not a conventional business. It more closely resembles a vocation or an amateur sport in which the primary goal is the activity itself rather than for its financial outcome. For owners and editors willing to work for the joy of the task, book publishing in my time has been immensely rewarding. For investors looking for conventional returns, it has been disappointing."

I have spent at least $10,000 since 2007 in this grass roots publishing venture and maybe made a few hundred in return. The first two issues of the first magazine I published with my first wife, Melee, ten years after we got divorced cost $8,000. I paid for them with student loan money. We could have sold some lucrative ads in these mags but chose to give away free ads in order to keep control.

I have always seen this press as an exercise in community building. Look at the live collaborations we've done online. I approach talented writers who may lack the ambition to pursue book writing with fervor, and create a space for them to thrive. Take the time to investigate all the books and mags we've published since 2007.

We published 5,000 copies of those first two magazine issues. I have one copy of each of them left. I am so proud of them. In defiance of The MFA School aesthetic there are no bio notes.

I will continue in this manner eternally as long as I am walking around without a skeleton.

Love,

Pappy

We are excited to announce two new chapbooks from Sara Smith and Chris Murphy! Come join us October 20th at 7 PM at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center located at 117 E Government St, Pensacola, FL 32502 (across from Seville Quarter) for a book release party! There will be lots of whooping, hooting, and hollering, along with wine and snacks. It’s a celebration of these authors and their exceptional work. Both books will be available to purchase and the authors are happy to sign copies. Read more about the authors and see the covers for the chapbooks below!

This event is doubling as the University of West Florida’s English Intern awards. We will be recognizing five interns who were essential in the development, editing, and design of these books. We hope to see you there!

We are also excited to announce the launching of our Instagram page! Make sure to follow to keep up with what’s going on.

Poetry only comes alive as community. Not in a drawer, or in a void. Emily Dickinson's community drove her to respond in disguise, perhaps, ultimately, in the opposite direction as they hoped. But her apparent literary quietness was part of a conscious fight. Is yours?

Ten years ago. Still good.

Featuring Barrett Travis's brilliant, original cover art and Ed Sanders's expected ambivalence about the question of the MFA School.

THE MFA SCHOOL: A call for submissions was emailed to every MFA writing program in the country requesting one poem only from any currently enrolled student. We received over 200 submissions (via email) from 57 writing programs. Five poems were selected from five poets to be included in this issue. O...
