Admittedly, I am not great at this social media thing, and like lots of us, I have a complicated relationship with the obligatory posts to promote my work, and get in a spiral sometimes of feeling bad about missing an episode release day. For example, I was feeling like a slacker for not letting you know last week that there is a fantastic new episode with out now. But, sometimes being late is actually right on time, because today I head to and one of my fondest memories of being an occasional fly on the wall for Azniv Korkejian’s journey is the photo here with our mutual friends at Newport. What you can’t see is Az is crying, overwhelmed with the emotional weight and joy of having played her first Newport. I also remembered this morning that the first photo here (in b&w) was taken the prior year in 2017 at and we took it so we could text that we had met. And the third pic of us together is at in 2019, when SHEROES was brand new in development, and Az came in to be one of my very first guests. I have been madly in love with her songwriting and music since her first album, and it’s not lost on me what a privilege it is to be granted these periodic moments of connection with each album, and getting to document these slices of her sojourn through life as an artist, specifically through her lens as a woman, as a Syrian-American, and now, as a mother. This new album, Neon Summer Skin, is so deeply beautiful, personal, meaningful, and impeccably crafted. A must listen!
