🌽Thursday Thoughts: Harvest Takes the Whole Family
Happy Thursday, Friends! As we approach harvest, the familiar signs are beginning to appear. Crops are changing, equipment is being checked, parts are being gathered and conversations are shifting toward moisture levels, weather forecasts and when the first field might be ready.
Here on our family farm, harvest is more than a season marked on the calendar. It is a family effort - - one that has been repeated through nine generations on the farm.
Not Every Job Leaves Tire Tracks
When people picture harvest, they often think about combines rolling through fields, grain carts moving and trucks hauling grain away. Those jobs are certainly an important part of it, but they are only one piece of everything happening behind the scenes.
Not every job on the farm leaves tire tracks in the field.
Some jobs look like meals prepared and packed, coffee brewed before daylight, parts picked up and children transported from one activity to another. They look like schedules rearranged, phones answered, errands handled and plans changed at the last minute because the weather shifted or something broke.
They look like keeping the household moving while harvest becomes the priority.
And sometimes, they look like sitting quietly for a moment and praying for safety, good weather and a successful harvest.
A Farm Wife’s Role Looks Different on Every Farm
Some farm wives are behind the wheel of the combine, tractor or grain truck. Others keep the books, run for parts, prepare meals, care for livestock, manage children or continue working at jobs away from the farm.
Many do a little bit of everything.
No two farms operate exactly alike, and no two farm wives have identical roles. What matters is not whether our responsibilities look the same. What matters is that each person contributes in the way their family and farm need most.
Farm wives may not always be the ones sitting behind the wheel, but we are often helping keep everything moving.
Much of that work happens quietly. It may never appear in a harvest photograph or be noticed by anyone outside the family, but it still matters.
Harvest Requires Flexibility
Harvest rarely follows a perfectly organized schedule. Supper may be later than planned. A quick repair may turn into several hours of work. A beautiful day may mean staying in the field long after dark, while unexpected rain can bring everything to a sudden stop.
Farm families learn to adjust.
We make plans while knowing those plans may change. We keep easy meals available, prepare what we can ahead of time and try to extend grace when everyone is tired.
The days can be long, but they remind us how much can be accomplished when a family works together.
More Than Bringing in a Crop
Harvest is the culmination of months of work, decisions, expenses, uncertainty and prayer. The crop being gathered represents seed planted in faith, long days spent caring for it and continued trust through weather conditions we could never control.
Farming makes the truth of seasons especially clear. There is a time to prepare, a time to plant, a time to wait and a time to gather.
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV
As harvest approaches, we are reminded again that we can do the work placed before us, but the outcome remains in God’s hands. We trust Him for provision, protection, and strength for each new day.
Every Role Matters
Harvest may look different from one farm to another, but it takes many hands and many kinds of work to bring a crop from the field to the bin.
The person operating the combine matters. The person driving the grain cart matters. The truck driver matters. The person making supper, picking up parts, caring for children, handling paperwork and praying over everyone working late matters, too.
Harvest takes the whole family - - and every role matters.
As we enter this busy season, may we remember to appreciate the work happening both in the field and behind the scenes. May we extend patience when the days grow long, recognize the contributions of every family member and pause long enough to thank God for another harvest.
