How would a national celebrity like Gene Autry help a small town like Kenton, Ohio, during the Great Depression? Kenton Hardware, a large producer of cast-iron toys, decided to replicate and sell an iron cap pistol used by the cowboy in his movies, complete with Gene’s signature and a faux pearl grip, for just 50 cents. Despite Kenton Hardware shutting down during World War II, the town still pays homage to the star who saved their economy with a dedicated mural and park. 🤠

Have you ever wondered how boulders got to where they are? 🪨 Many of them have different rock compositions than their surroundings, making them “erratic.” This means glaciers carried them across the country and left them far from home after they melted thousands of years ago. Now, they serve as a map to the past, giving geologists insight into what the earth used to look like.

When ospreys find a home on one of our utility poles, our lineworkers take immediate action to avoid potential outages. 🪺 With help from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, they work together to find a safer, more suitable perch for their nests. This past May, a nest was found in South Central Power Co.’s training yard, offering a low-risk opportunity to educate lineworkers.

The complexity of our electric grid is something that many Americans don’t think much about. Astounding speed and precision are needed to efficiently and reliably deliver power at the flip of a switch, but this also means more resources are needed to keep it consistent 24/7. ⚡️ Your electric co-op makes sure to prioritize resilience of the power grid and navigate challenges as they arise.

Hear what else Craig Grooms, our CEO and president, has to say about adapting to always available power 👉 https://bit.ly/3IPaiC7.

The Great Lakes are home to more than 6,000 shipwrecks, one of those being the Western Reserve—a steel freighter that went down in Lake Superior in 1892. 🚢 Despite sinking 133 years ago, it was just discovered last summer by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society. The only artifact recovered from the ship, one of its lights (pictured below), helped them identify the Cleveland-built ship and is now displayed at the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo.
