Jupiter at Opposition: Witness the 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐬

In one week, Jupiter reaches opposition on January 10th, 2026.

Opposition means Earth passes directly between Jupiter and the Sun, the same geometry that creates a full moon. From our position, we see Jupiter’s fully-lit face at its closest approach of the year.

This is why it’s so bright right now.

At opposition, Jupiter rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. It’s visible all night, tracking across the sky opposite the Sun’s path. The word “opposition” literally means “across from.”

🌌🔭 With binoculars, you can see four tiny dots flanking the planet. The Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto. They shift positions night to night as they orbit.

Galileo saw these moons in 1610 and realized they were orbiting Jupiter, not Earth.

That observation broke the geocentric model of the universe. ⛓️‍💥🌎
