Museum For Black Girls

Field Archivists Chinyere Neal and Jenohn Euland, joined by 2026 Interns Chanah Dunbar and Jasmine Sears, spent a day on-site at Virginia State University’s WVST 91.3 FM (“The Source”), working alongside Programming Manager Jennifer Williamson. 💙🧡 Virginia State University

The team surveyed decades of audio history across the Hunter-McDaniel building and Multipurpose Center — uncovering roughly 60 open-reels, 34 cassettes, 10 minidiscs, 200–300 vinyl discs, and thousands of CDs, plus a look at how WVST manages its digital archive today. 💿📻

The team is leaving with 164 items headed to NEDCC for digitization, including open-reels, CDs, minidiscs, and compact cassettes — prioritizing magnetic formats at greatest risk and WVST-original programming like Crime Solvers Radio Profiles and Face the Facts with Faith. ✨

📻The WNAA team were all so welcoming as they prepared a variety of materials for us to explore and collect. From open reels to hard drives, we had the pleasure of sorting through this audio and collecting approximately 66 items for digitization at NEDCC. 💿

We are super excited about the possibility of uncovering the WNAA produced sounds and histories from their archives. Thank you for a great time NCAT. Here’s to preserving the Aggie sound! 💙💛

The Hidden History of HBCUs

With support from Assistant Directors Pyllis Jeffers-Coly and Will Tchakirides, the project’s oral history team conducted ten one-on-one interviews at North Carolina A&T. 🎙️

Combined, the team recorded more than thirteen hours of oral history content within the hallowed studios of WNAA 90.1 FM, adding to a collection that began with Sutton’s interview of station co-founder Tony Welborne in March 2026. ✨

Fellow Dana Green interviewed WNAA alums Howard Gaither, Rev. Dr. Harvey Rice, Jr., aka Pastor Chip, and Timothy Bryant, or DJ TLUV.

📍Our final stop in Alabama was Alabama State University, home of WVAS 90.7 FM! 📻 90.7 WVAS-FM

Our introductory meeting brought together more than 10 representatives including the Dean of Libraries Janice Franklin, Archivist Michael Bean, Dr. Tara White, News Director Melanie Hogan, and Marketing Administrator Jamillah Bell, all of whom were invested in this project and eager to share the preservation methods they have used and explore more ways to collaborate to preserve the stations legacy. 🎙️

Thank you, Alabama State University, for your incredible hospitality and your commitment to preserving HBCU history. We look forward to what we can build together. ✨

Janice Franklin gave us a tour of the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture, where we learned more about the university’s intentional efforts to preserve the history of both the station and community. After touring the station and the library, we were gifted swag bags by Jamillah Bell, who also serves as a renegade archivist finding buried treasures to show and tell more of the station’s history. ✨

📍Our next stop was none other than Oakwood University’s very on WJOU ‘Praise’ 90.1 FM 📻 Oakwood University Praise 90.1 WJOU

We toured the station’s newly renovated spaces under the leadership of Station Manager, Dawana Baker. We also met with the Heather Rodriguez-James, the Director of Library Services and Archivist, Evaline Otieno who walked us through the archives and shared important documents and materials connected to the station’s history. 📀

🏛️ We wrapped up this visit at the Eva B. D***s Library and Museum, continuing our exploration about the history and community that surrounds Oakwood University. We alongside the WJOU team are excited to begin collaborating, to capture, preserve and safeguard the stories that sustains the legacy of the station and community it serves. 🎙️✨

📍Our first stop on the Alabama site visit road trip was a great reminder of how interconnected the HBCU radio community is. We began at Alabama A&M University, home of the WJAB 90.9 FM, where we were greeted by Elvin Jenkins, WJAB Station Manager and Director of Electronic Communications, alongside Veronica Henderson, the Head of Archives and Special Collections. 📻 WJAB 90.9FM Alabama A&M University

💭Our first stop was filled with conversation and exploration and history as we toured the station and library archives and connected with members of the WJAB team including Jessica Martin, WJAB Music Director and on air personality, Douglass Turner. We also learned that Mr. Jenkins was already familiar with our work, as he knew many of our narrators from our time in North Carolina.🎙️

We wrapped up day one with a stop at the Alabama Black Archives Research Center and Museum, taking the opportunity to further learn and connect with the history that makes this work important and look forward to the collaboration and preservation work ahead with WJAB 90.9FM

✨ This week our team members are traveling to Alabama for a week of site visits to three historic HBCU radio stations. During the week, we plan to visit WJOU 90.1 FM at Oakwood University, WJAB 90.9 FM at Alabama A&M University, and WVAS 90.7 FM at Alabama State University. As we get to learn more about the impact and legacy of these HBCU stations, we are excited and prepared to document and share these station’s histories with everyone! 📻
