Our Oral Historian and Assistant Director of Administration and Outreach recently traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a site visit to WSNC 90.5 FM. 📻

During their visit, they connected with station personnel, explored archival materials, and learned more about the station’s rich history and ongoing productions. As heard by Vincentt in the video, these site visits are an important part of our work helping us build relationships with station and library partners while gaining a deeper understanding of the stories and voices that make each HBCU radio so impactful.

We are grateful to Library Technician, India Page as well as Assistant Program Director, Phil Allen and the WSNC team for welcoming us as we continue our mission to preserve and celebrate the legacy of HBCU radio. ✨

We digitized and returned over 24 hours of original WCSU programming dating back to the station’s launch in 1962 — preserving stories, sounds and moments that continue to shape the legacy of Central State University.

The ceremonial return brought together alumni, narrators, community listeners and all those whose lives have been touched by Central State and the airwaves of . We are grateful for everyone who participated and helped make this moment, this return, THIS CELEBRATION possible! ✨

During our convening in Yellow Springs, HBCU RPP Oral Historian Vincent Sutton sat down with Micheal D. Wolifie Richberg for an oral history centered on his time and legacy at and Central State University. 🎙️

Richberg served as an on-air personality and hosted “The Nite Cap” from his freshman year in 1974 into the early 1980s. Listeners can look forward to hearing Micheal’s journey from Brooklyn, NY to Wilberforce, OH and how and WCSU 88.9 FM shaped the person he is today! ✨

✈️ The team convened in Yellow Springs, Ohio for a week of meaningful activities centered on collaboration, learning and preservation.

From onboarding our Summer 2026 interns, Jasmine Sears and Chanah Dunbar, and providing hands-on training in capturing quality audio from audio extraordinaire Neenah Ellis to touring the campus of Central State University and becoming acquainted with our new home at the Union Schoolhouse, the week was filled with growth and connection alongside our partners at .3 as we prepared for the ceremonial return to .

From training our summer interns and touring our newly renovated facility at the historic Union Schoolhouse, to preparing for tonight’s celebratory ceremonial return to WCSU 88.9 FM, the team has officially arrived in Yellow Springs for a week of intentionality, bonding, and celebration.

📍Join us tonight at 4 PM for the ceremonial return of preserved materials to Central State University’s radio station at the Union Schoolhouse. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and guided tours of the Center of Radio Preservation and archives. ⏰

Join is in welcoming to the team our 2026 Summer Interns, Chanah Dunbar and Jasmine Sears! ✨

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia Jasmine Sears, is currently a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Alabama within the Women’s Studies Master’s program. She is passionate about critical archival theory that challenges traditional ideas of archives and centers community perspectives—and enthusiastic about bringing that passion to the project!

Chana Dunbar is a recent graduate of The George Washington University’s Museum Studies Graduate Program with a bachelor’s degree from Howard University. She is passionate about safeguarding the voices, stories, and soundscapes that have shaped Black intellectual life, community dialogue, and cultural expression across generations. Through her work, she strives to honor the enduring influence of African Diasporic cultures and contribute to a more inclusive and representative historical record.

The HBCU Radio Preservation Project is proud to celebrate the return of preserved historic audio from Central State University’s legendary radio station, WCSU 88.9 FM — the first federally licensed radio station at an HBCU and the only minority-owned and operated non-commercial public radio station in Ohio. 📻

💿 This newly digitized collection includes 24 hours of original programming spanning decades of storytelling, music, culture, and community impact since WCSU’s founding in 1962. 📻✨

Join us Wednesday, May 13 at 4 p.m. at WYSO’s Union Schoolhouse in Yellow Springs, Ohio, for an open house and special audio montage showcasing the preserved sounds and stories of WCSU. 💛

During our return to Wiley University’s KBWC 91.1 FM, the project’s oral history team recorded 4 interviews, totaling 5 hours and 22 minutes of total record time capturing stories that speaks to the essence of the stations call letters “Keep Building Wiley University”.

Narrators included KBWC’s General Manager and Mass Communications Professor, Dr. Natalie Hill; Program Manager and student host, Aliyah Adams; on-air talent Jasmin Banks; and Education and Black Studies Professor, Dr. Pamela Hill—a community listener who got her start on HBCU radio as a student at Langston University’s KALU 89.3 FM. 📻

Our field archivists also went to work, collecting 46 continuous loop cartridges, 10 open reels, and 124 compact cassettes from KBWC for a total of 180 items. Amongst the extensive collection, we found many recordings marked as “Chapel”, as well as what seems to be a show called “Religious Emphasis” which appeared on both cassettes and reels. We also discovered an an audio cassette labeled “Mrs. MLK” that dates back to the 1970s. 💿

We’re excited to discover the stories and sounds preserved within these materials as they make their way to NEDCC for digitization. Stay tuned for the return of these precious materials and stories to their station communities!
