Are students required to learn Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSHE)?

No. Families can opt students out of all or some of CSHE instruction. At YCS, this instruction has always been optional. State law requires us to teach Comprehensive Sexual Health at various grade levels.

⭐However, the school board takes a very narrow approach and believes that families should determine what and how their students should be taught in regards to CSHE.⭐

Remember:

✅ Families are invited each year to review the curriculum materials.

✅ Families can choose to opt students out of all or some of CSHE instruction. In Yelm Communities Schools, this instruction has always been optional.

Visit our website (https://www.ycs.wednet.edu/academics/comprehensive-sexual-health-education) for more details on grade levels topics and learning standards.

Q: Where are all the lottery dollars that were supposed to fund education?

A: We wanted to share some resources (links) that help explain how the state funds education, but it is a very complex formula that the legislature manages.

⭐“Washington’s Lottery: Where the Money Goes”

⭐WA Government - House of Representatives - K12 Education Facts

⭐WA Department of Revenue - Funding Education

⭐Initiative 728 - Approved in 2000 shifting lottery funds into Student Achievement Fund and the Education Construction Fund

⭐Opportunities Pathway Account

⭐According to the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA), the percentage of Washington state's budget allocated to K-12 education has decreased over the years.

"Washington ranks well below the national average for investment in K-12 education as a percentage of Gross State Product (the state’s output) at 3.11%.

As Washington State’s operating budget has increased, the percentage dedicated to funding K-12 education has not kept up. Five years ago, about 52.4% of the state’s general fund budget was dedicated to K-12 education. Now, it’s down to about 43.1%, even though it is the state’s constitutional responsibility to provide adequate funding to support basic education services." (Source:OSPI)
