Water work can make or break a retriever—and swim-by is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.

Tomorrow on The Hunt Test Hobo Podcast, I sit down with Marc Patton to talk about swim-by, cheating singles, angles, corrections, and how to build a dog that actually understands water.

Your dog isn't bad... they're doing exactly what comes naturally.

When a retriever walks into a field, the first thing they do is pick what they think is the destination.

Great handling dogs aren't born knowing there could be multiple destinations—they're taught.

That's why drills like the Four Pole Drill and Cold Blinds are so valuable. They teach your dog to trust that you know where the bird is, even when it isn't where they expected.

Building that trust is what separates dogs that fight the handler from dogs that confidently take casts.

Training by yourself can feel isolating.

No training partners. No one to bounce ideas off of. No one to tell you if you're on the right track.

The good news? Almost every successful trainer has been there.

Progress doesn't come from having the perfect setup—it comes from showing up, learning, and putting in the work one session at a time.
Keep training. Keep asking questions. Keep getting better. Your dog will thank you for it.

Great dog training isn't about punishing mistakes—it's about shaping the behaviors you want to see.

The more clearly you communicate with your dog, the faster they learn and the more confident they become. When we focus on teaching instead of correcting, training becomes something both you and your dog enjoy.
