Two years after megaesophagus and neurological issues caused by Acquired Myasthenia Gravis, Quill is doing incredibly well — but MG life means staying alert to the little things.

This week brought another isolated vomiting episode, and with it, that familiar tightrope between gratitude and worry.

Normal days are the biggest gift. And we don’t take a single one for granted.

This blog shares updates on how he's doing and why vomiting is such a red flag for a Myasthenia Gravis dog.

A Poem by Quill Smith

Three paths diverged in a suburban park,
And I came across three Golden Retrievers
And their moms.

And be one dog, long I stood
And looked at them for as long as I could
While mom told me “yes” as part of my training.
But then I could no longer contain myself,
And having perhaps looked as long as I could,
Because they looked like they would be fun playmates,
I lost my s**t.

And so Mom held onto my harness and tried to correct me,
But oh, I kept barking, and barking, as they calmly passed by.
And then we kept heading for home.
I doubted if I should ever come back,
But Mom is a pushover and loves me,
So I know we shall go again tomorrow.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence
Four dogs diverged in the park, and I -
Am the only one who barked.

My husband has cheese.

Quill usually gets a bite of cheese.

This cheese has horseradish.

Quill is making his displeasure known. 😜

Two years ago Quill was suffering from megaesophagus (ME) caused by Acquired Myasthenia Gravis. Back then we were still searching for answers for why his esophagus had stopped working.

This was his 2nd day home from the emergency vet and veterinary ICU. My husband built him a bare bones Bailey Chair the day he was released from the vet, and we lined it in blanket and towels and gave him a human neck pillow as a cushion. I am still amazed at how quickly he acclimated to eating in essentially a high chair.

Today his ME is controlled by medicine and he gets to live life like a "regular" dog, including eating from a normal bowl. I never stop watching, monitoring, and yes, worrying, but as far as he is concerned, he's living life like every other Labrador Retriever.

As I type it is gross and rainy outside and we haven't walked yet. He is full of shenanigans and trying to get into stuff to express his displeasure about not having walked yet. After what we went through 2 years ago, I am here for every "naughty" moment, because there were several days when they thought he might not come home to us.

Quill got a new harness from Santa, and we've taken 2 walks so far.

It's SO hard to find a harness with a front, no-pull ring that does not cross over their shoulders. With Quill and his bout with megaesophagus 2 years ago, I will always use extreme caution that nothing is pulling at his neck.

So far I'm loving this X Link Dog Harness from EzyDog North America! Santa also brought the accompanying leash, which I personally love, the feel is good in my hands, and I'm liking the bungee aspect to it.

Of course, no harness is magic, we still have a lot of loose-leash training work to do, but I'm excited to have this new harness for our daily walks!

Is your dog on the “naughty list” this year?

Before you decide, here’s a little reframe: most “naughty” behavior isn’t misbehavior — it’s communication.

Dogs chew, steal, bark, counter-surf, and cause chaos because they’re bored, confused, under-stimulated, or trying to meet a need they don’t have the words for.

In my newest piece, I share what Quill taught me (again) this week — including why I still interrupt and redirect his mischief, but also look deeper at why it’s happening in the first place.

If you’re navigating winter boredom, holiday chaos, or a dog with a very creative brain, this one’s for you.
