This Buying Season Is A Perfect Time To Unsubscribe From Annoying Marketing Emails. (2 min. Read)..

Whether you’re partaking in deals this year or passing them by, take a moment to embrace the season’s true gift: all the emails you’ve been meaning to unsubscribe from, all in one place, all at the same time.

These tips will help you regain some inbox zen.

How deep you’re buried under deal emails depends on how many lists you’ve signed up for along the way; I’ve received over 70 Cyber Monday offers 24 hours leading up to this past Cyber Monday alone, including multiple from a few brands that seem especially parched. (Pottery Barn, please relax.) And at the bottom of each and every one is a link to unsubscribe. In fact, the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 legally requires bulk emails to include a clearly articulated way for you to opt out. It usually just takes a couple of clicks.

Most email providers also give you a small shortcut. Gmail automatically appends an Unsubscribe link next to the sender’s name when you open a marketing email on the desktop. Click it and a pop-up will ask if you’re sure you want to go through with it. Hit Unsubscribe one more time, and you’re set. There’s no comparable unsubscribe option in the Gmail app, but you can block a given sender by opening an email, tapping the three-dot menu on the right side of the screen, and selecting Block. Since most companies use different email addresses for spam and receipts, blocking deal emails won’t keep the latter from coming through going forward.

The iOS Mail app and Outlook both offer a similar Unsubscribe link at the top of emails, saving you from scrolling to the bottom and combing through the fine print for one. As a bonus, they also work on mobile. (And while you’re fiddling around on iOS, maybe take a minute to cancel any lingering subscriptions you’re not using anymore.)

Yes, there are automated tools that will do all of this for you. But when you link a service like Unroll.me to your Gmail account, they can—and do—then turn around and use your “transactional emails” to fuel marketing reports. That came as a nasty surprise to Unroll.me users in 2017, and maybe still would in 2019.

You can, of course, do your unsubscribing on an ad hoc basis, canceling emails as they come in. But that’s what made this retail buting season such a splendid opportunity for razing your inbox: They’re all there in one place, stacked atop one another like desperate Jenga blocks. Just go to your Promotions tab, scroll back to whenever feels right—if you’re feeling truly ambitious, unsubscribe from any brand you don’t want to hear from ever again, or at least until the next time you inadvertently wind up on their list. Just know that retailers have up to 10 days to process your request, so a few missives might slip through before the cancelation takes hold.

Maybe you don’t want to unsubscribe from everything; that’s fine, too! But it’s worth taking a few minutes out of your life anytime you feel your inbox’s invite list needs to be a little more exclusive.

SOMEBODY IS BUYING YOUR .ORG NAME!
Capitalism Can Sometimes Be Scary
(1 min read)

Especially when others are potentially capitalizing on you or your business and you have no control over what effect it has on both.

If you are a not-for-profit, news here https://cnn.it/2PdSv will effect you.
What, you didn't think the registrars like the 'Public Interest Registry' (they own all .orgs) could be sold? The news is NOT exclusive to not-for-profits.

The bottom line is with the vast selections of 'TLDs' (Top Level Domains - like .store, .biz, .online, etc.) designations to define what kind of entity you are aren't as important as they used to be just a couple years ago.

Do yourself and your business a favor and be aware of what can assist your presence, but more importantly add to your branding assets, services, abilities and the opportunity to present them online - even if you don't use them. What about .us or .ca, if you are operate in the USA or Canada?, "Lock Them Up!" They could come in handy one day.

Wait, we thought multiple domains are bad for SEO and rankings?

Yes they are, if you post content on them and operate it as a mirror to the same content you have on your actual site or you just point or forward your domains to the main domain. But, they aren't if you don't use them to host or if you post independent blogs or content that highlights and recommends different aspects of your actual core business/product or services. If you decide to use more ammunition to drive traffic to your main site, in the way of other domain names, make sure the 'metatags' are different to those on your actual site, but that they support your actual site.

It's the least expensive and best online investment you can make.

How Repurposing Your Old Content Brings New Life and New Traffic
By John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing

If you’ve been in business for a while, you’ve probably generated a lot of content over the years. From blog posts to social media updates to podcasts and webinars, many businesses have shared tons of valuable information with their audience.

But sometimes that older content starts to collect dust. It’s out of date, it’s buried deep in the archives, and it’s not doing anything for your business. Repurposing old content can be a great way to save you time with respect to content creation, all while getting the most out of your existing assets, and drawing new traffic into your site.

Add New Information to Evergreen Content

Some content never goes out of style. Many businesses have created foundational content that provides readers in-depth information on their industry, and this content can continue to be useful for years. But just like anything that’s getting up there in years, it sometimes needs a refresh to regain some of its old sparkle.

Take our content here, for example. We’ve written thousands of blog posts over the years on just about every digital marketing topic. Something like a foundational piece on SEO can remain relevant for a long time, but some of the specifics will need to be updated as search engines change their algorithms and best practices shift.

Refreshing content and republishing anew, with an acknowledgement that it’s been updated to reflect the latest on the given topic, is one of the quickest and easiest ways to repurpose your old content. This allows you to hang onto any goodwill that particular link has garnered in terms of ranking over the years, while introducing it to a whole new audience and allowing it to generate even better standing through an enhanced life cycle.

Blog posts can get boring after a while. Reading through one after the other demands a lot of focus from your audience, and today’s consumers are looking for new ways to engage with content.

Video has become hugely popular of late and can add a lot of visual interest to existing pages. Plus, if someone’s unable to read through an entire blog post, they may have the time to watch a quick video that provides a summary of the information in the post. You can incorporate other forms of media, too. A relevant podcast episode, infographic, or webinar can spice up existing content.

Because you’re creating dynamic media to accompany the existing content, it’s easier to script out what you need and get it done. You can quickly distill the blog post down to a handful of bullet points and from there create a video that riffs on those key elements.

Again, this saves you time in the content creation process and allows you to attract a new audience to this content. While someone might not have wanted to read 1,000 words on the topic, that infographic that hits all the highlights might be just what they were looking for.

Transform it Into Other Content

Creating content takes a lot of time. You need to put together a thoughtful strategy and build your content calendar around that. Then there’s the process of actually making the content itself. Blogging involves research and revision; video and podcasting means you need to adopt production skills and be able to edit video and audio.

If you go through all the trouble of creating content in the first place, why not get as much mileage out of it as possible? Let’s say you own a home remodeling business. A while back, you posted a video walking prospective clients through the ins and outs of the kitchen renovation process, from budgeting and planning to selecting materials to managing construction timelines. The video generates lots of views and drives traffic to your website. You know that the content is useful to your audience and helps win attention for your business.

Don’t just leave it at that video! Instead, get the video transcribed, so you can easily convert it into a blog post. (I love Rev for fast, accurate transcription services). And don’t stop there: Take the audio from that video and transform it into a podcast episode. Suddenly, your one piece of content has multiplied into three. And that provides more opportunities for you to reach your audience through the medium that works best for them.

Assemble Hub Pages

Most businesses have their content scattered here, there, and everywhere. There are videos and podcast episodes on various pages on their website and hosted on external platforms. Their blog posts are so numerous they could rival the National Archives. But the content is scattered, so it’s not actually serving a purpose.

If you want to get the most out of this content, you need to organize it around hub pages. I’ve described hub pages as your own mini-Wikipedia on your website. You start by identifying a broad topic that’s of interest to your readers. For example, we work with a lot of local businesses, so we’ve created the Ultimate Guide to Local Marketing hub page on our site.

From there, we walk local businesses through everything they need to know to supercharge their marketing efforts. We cover the basics of Google My Business, paid search, SEO for local businesses, and reviews and competitive analysis. Under these broad topics, we’ve gathered together relevant content.

For local business owners, this repository of information is a gold mine. Rather than having to search through our thousands of pieces of content, the most relevant ones are organized nicely for them in the hub page’s table of contents. Suddenly, this page becomes a go-to resource. Visitors return again and again to go deeper in depth on the topic, and share the posts with their colleagues. Search engines take note of this behavior. They realize that the content is useful, and suddenly our hub page moves up the SERPs.

When done correctly, hub pages can get your local business ranking on the first page of results for relevant search terms. And you achieve that strong ranking by repurposing and reorganizing existing content, rather than having to start from scratch.

Creating content takes a lot of time and work. Repurposing your existing content allows you to get the greatest benefit from that investment. Not only does repurposing give it a new life and introduce it to a new audience, it can also help you boost your SEO standing and grow your reach even further.

BREAKING IT UP? SAY IT AIN'T SO --:

I love Open Source. I hate conglomerates that default to only themselves for everything they offer. It's just anti-Internet with respect to what the Internet became after it was released. And it is also anti-open market that is fair to all. As a matter of fact, I haven't touched Microsoft Office products in my business or personal computer use since 2013. There are better ones out there like 'OpenOffice' and the better one 'LibreOffice.' And they don't crash!

They are free, so why spend money for an office software suite?

I also love Google. Although a conglomerate and regulators are talking about them breaking it up - I ask what conglomerate allows you to never have to spend a dime with them with everything from VoIP phone service to email, to open docs, to a selection of entertainment that one would ever really need in the way of YouTube videos.

I might be Orwellian naive, but if they want my data I'll take it as a compliment as I use their software and services to grow my business, service my clients, help not-for-profits (the core part of my business) and grow those clients markets. And all of their services are available in exchange for some of your data.

Regulators, don't mess with it to force them to change or drop services or only be available for those that can afford or are willing to pay for it. But, if you'd rather pay for Google's upgraded services you can if you're wanting the best of what they offer.

If those same regulators are worried about misuse of data from mining and sweeping users, unchecked misguided or untruthful posts that affect societies and governments you should instead look at Twitter and Facebook and break them up. That's where your exposure is.

(Ironically I'm posting this on Facebook - Oh, and in keeping with their branding standards I'm using an uppercase "F" in their name.)
