This weekend is the Day in Paradise Duck Races for the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club!

My kids have been talking about the duck races nonstop this week. They are very confident that our duck will win. (Me too!)

Moving isn't just stressful for humans... ๐Ÿพ Here are some quick tips to help make your pets feel at ease during the transition:

1. Leave the pets' items, like beds and toys, in place until the last minute

2. Make sure those items are placed in the new home right when you arrive

3. Use leashes until pets get acclimated to their new yard and boundaries

4. Moving is hectic but try to stay on schedule with feedings and walks

5. Slowly give them reign of the entire house to avoid accidents and potential damage from scratching and chewing

Time for a history lesson. Anytime someone uses the phrase "plain vanilla," as if it somehow means boring or unoriginal, I kind of laugh to myself. Apparently, most don't know the real history of vanilla.

For starters, it's the second most expensive spice in the world ( #1 is saffron). Vanilla is the only edible fruit out of 35,000 species of orchid. Frankly, it's a statistical miracle. It requires a special tropical climate to grow, and each flower blooms for, wait for it... one day.

Pound for pound, vanilla seeds are worth more than silver.

Historically, only kings could afford such a rare delicacy as vanilla.

Not to mention the invention of ice cream itself, which would have required sending an expedition to the mountains to bring back ice during a hot summer. And yet here I am, casually enjoying this frozen dessert flavored with one of the most miraculous spices in the world. ๐Ÿฆ

You may call it "plain vanilla." I call it a miracle.

Modern life is pretty amazing if you have an attitude of gratitude. ๐Ÿ™‚

There is an unspoken bond that we mothers share. It can't be summed up in one word or phrase because it runs so deep and has so many layersโ€ฆ

So, here's to the sleepless nights, the endless loads of laundry, the grocery hauls to keep the cupboards stocked and bellies full.

To the carpools and shuttling to activities, and the chore charts to help instill a good work ethic.

To the meltdowns and hard "no's" that were just as hard for us to say as it was for them to hear.

But also to the bedtime stories, the snuggles on the couch, the "I love you, Mommy"s, and the meaningful conversations you start to have as they get older.

There's no other job that's more important than being a Mom. And it's that realization and pride that come along when your children finally grow up and do amazing things and become the amazing young humans you hoped they would be.

There's no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one...Happy Mother's Day.
