Bodiam Castle Explained On Location | Medieval History vs Modern Myths

Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 to defend the River Rother and serve as a family residence, not as a mysterious machine.

Filmed on location at Bodiam Castle in East Sussex, this short breaks down what the historical record actually tells us about its construction, purpose, and architecture.

Built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, construction took around 5-7 years. The locally sourced Wealden sandstone was transported to the site by barges along the River Rother, the very waterway the castle was designed to protect during a period of tension with France.

The layout also tells a story. With multiple guest chambers and a substantial great hall, Bodiam Castle was designed for comfort and status as well as defence. It functioned as a fortified manor house, a family home built to project wealth, legitimacy, and security.
In this on-site breakdown, I look at:
- Why the castle was built
- How medieval construction actually worked
- What the bridge placement and gatehouse reveal
- Why primary sources matter

If you enjoy evidence-based history and architectural analysis, this one's for you.

What other medieval sites should I cover next?

The Terracotta Warriors are one of the most documented archaeological discoveries in the world, yet myths about them keep resurfacing online.

In this short video, I explain:
- what they're made of
- how they were constructed
- why some figures survived better than others
- what archaeology actually shows
Filmed with on-site photos from Xi’an, where the warriors were discovered.

A little humour included, but the evidence does the heavy lifting. If you enjoy clear, evidence-based history explanations, this one's for you.

This post by Question Everything paints a false narrative by cherry-picking information about modern architecture. We built the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in 2020, would you call it an 'ugly characterless box'?

The idea that past civilisations only produced monumental stone masterpieces is survivorship bias. They made some bland, poor quality buildings back in the day too, they just didn't last or weren't worth photographing.

It says 1867 to commemorate the year of the Alaska Purchase/the Statehood of Nebraska as the theme of the 1904 World's Fair was US expansion. It was built for the 1904 World's Fair and is not an older building. Any amount of research would have confirmed this but the truth doesn't get as many clicks does it 🙄

Yes the Mongol Horde, Akkadian Empire and Sumerians were well known for their use of AI 🙄 just because AI exists now, it doesn't mean it's always existed, why is that concept so hard for people? 😂

One Foul Wow with more nonsense claims about this being ancient architecture from an advanced civilisation.

This bridge was built in 2017. Not only does this fact disprove the idea that it was built by an ancient civilisation, but it also debunks the idea that we can't build wonders anymore.

If you disagree with me then find a picture of this bridge from 50 years ago to prove that our construction timeline doesn't add up ☕

More nonsense. The Towers of Bologna have nothing to do with airships or free energy. Return to the Old World probably knows that but saying rubbish like this gets them and their psy-op grifter buddies a lot of clicks, so the lies continue.

I'll be making a video about the Towers soon so keep an eye on my YouTube for that.
