Debt is a form of social control. Working families are living paycheck to paycheck while using debt to subsidize the basic conditions of everyday life—housing, education, healthcare, childcare, transportation, and even emergencies. We are told debt creates mobility, when for millions of families it is the price they are forced to pay for the absence of it.

We need systems and structures that do more than help families survive their debt.

We must reimagine them so families can build, care for, and sustain their lives with freedom, stability, and dignity.

Today we celebrate the GUNCLES—the gay uncles by blood, by choice, and by community who show up for our kids with love, joy, wisdom, protection, and just the right amount of inappropriate commentary at the family function. 😂

Q***r people have always helped raise children. We have always been aunties, uncles, godparents, chosen family, bonus parents, mentors, caregivers, and the people kids know they can call when they need an adult who gets it.

Family has never been just a mom, a dad, and their biological children. Family is the people who love us, claim us, protect us, teach us, and help us become more fully ourselves.

So today, tag your favorite Guncle and tell him you love him.

We were forced to relocate as a result of becoming political targets for our social change work. Arkansas to DC. Sight unseen we found home in Takoma, DC— and awhile after found Motorkat. It has been our local haunt, favorite place, and the workers there are unparalleled in their integrity, commitment to community, and hospitality. Our landlords are selling the house we rent from them because quote: they inherited this 8 generation home and are reluctant landlords. This post isn’t about the pitfalls of landlords, it is about Motorkat- please focus.
Anyway!! Local restaurants and bars are community spaces and if you are looking for one, Motorkat might be the place. This is not an add— just a love note. Get into it.

Hi! Quick question… could yall stop raising mini klansmen?! That would be super swell, thanks!

The Parent Pledge to Protect Our Children from Mass Surveillance is a national campaign calling on parents, caregivers, grandparents, educators, and community members to oppose the expansion of Flock Safety automated license plate readers and other surveillance technologies in neighborhoods and schools.

The pledge comes as communities across the country increasingly face decisions about whether to adopt automated surveillance systems that collect and retain information about people’s movements. Parenting is Political argues that families should have a meaningful voice in those decisions and that investments in children’s safety should prioritize people over pervasive surveillance.

Our children deserve to grow up in communities where they are known by their neighbors–not tracked by cameras. Parents should never be forced to choose between safety and privacy. We reject the false narrative that surveillance automatically creates safer schools. Real safety comes from investing in relationships, mental health, youth programs, and community care.

The Parent Pledge asks signatories to:
•Oppose expansion of automated surveillance technologies in schools and neighborhoods
•Demand transparency and public accountability regarding surveillance technologies, data collection, data retention, and data sharing
•Advocate for investments in counselors, restorative practices, and evidence-based community informed safety strategies
•Defend every child’s right to privacy and freedom from unnecessary surveillance
•Organize alongside other parents to ensure families have a voice in decisions that affect their communities

The campaign is rooted in the belief that children should not grow up under systems of routine monitoring that normalize constant data collection.

Every child deserves the freedom to walk to school, visit a friend, attend a football game, or be picked up by a parent without becoming another entry in a database. The question isn’t whether we want safe communities–we all do. The question is what kind of society we want to build to achieve that safety.
