Meet Keyla Benítez, our new Archivist! Keyla is a Mexican historian and a graduate of . She is also a former Undergraduate Research Fellow through . Her work explores the role of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums in preserving community memory. Her senior thesis focused on the lynchings of Mexican women in Texas and the power of historical access for communities of color as an act of resistance against cultural erasure.

“There is power and recognition within archives, and that has to be redefined for it to be inclusive for everyone.” —Benítez, 2022

Welcome Keyla!

As caretakers of our growing book and zine collection, we are very appreciative of ‘s custom design for our Reference Library, as we’re able to better support artists, community members, and students. Now there’s more room to welcome visitors, organize our archival materials, and expand our book collection. Just in time for student visits this month, and scholars joining us in the fall. Thanks as always our friends from Modern Shelving

NEW BOOK presale— 🐜 •

Ants, Passiflora, and Me by Lynne Shapiro, translated by , is a bilingual dos-a-dos publication designed to resemble a notebook. Most of the titles and illustrations were done by recreating and adapting drawings and letters found in her family archive. Shapiro highlights a convergence of hosts and migrations, illuminating the vital symbiotic relationships that community requires.

The cover was hotstamped with foil on Colorplan cardstock, with lilac endpapers in Hahnemühle. Internal pages printed on ivory Springhill lightweight paper, including an insert. External (yes, external) copper staples on Asahi book cloth make up the spine. The edition consists of 200 copies: dry stamped, numbered, and signed.

As a studio, we are pleased to announce there are several collaborations in the works with Puerto Rican artist 🇵🇷 We have been helping him document, catalog, curate and write about his work and processes. If either you as an individual or your institution is interested in collaborating with him/us, or acquiring some of his work, send us an email at [email protected]

“Ever since I was little. My father was telling me about Puerto Rican history and the various ways Puerto Ricans get ripped off (…) The fact that the Puerto Rican flag was illegal for years. That they tested bombs there. They used Puerto Ricans as cheap labor. The list goes on and on. Somebody once said that we write history to see where we’ve been, and we write fiction to explain how we feel about history. I don’t know who said that, but I think about that a lot.”

John Vasquez Mejías, is a writer, artist, printmaker and puppeteer, storyteller, and art teacher. He is best known for his self-published (now trade) book “The Puerto Rican War”, detailing a little-known group of Puerto Rican revolutionaries in 1950. After 4 years, he just finished working on a wood carved book about Lo**ta Lebrón. Mejías drew since elementary school, making murals and comics. As an adult, he creates puppet shows to discuss subjects he would rather not lecture about.

New workshop alert‼️ONSITE🎊
Code Paper Pattern with

We’ll use code to create adjustable patterns to make folding-paper textures, fields of shapes you can print or save as raster or vector graphic files, and a colored papercraft solid. These could be useful for designing patterned textiles, book covers, web images, and applications in branding, or personal projects.

Three basic ideas central to coding will be explored: variables, step-and-repeat loops, and conditional (if-then) statements.

No coding experience is necessary! Link in bio!

Color printing and paper will be provided. If you want to take the workshop and don’t have a Mac laptop, we have extra ones we can lend to some participants. If you need financial assistance, shoot us an email: [email protected]
