Miss Sue wasn’t running a restaurant. She was making egg rolls in her kitchen and selling them out the back door of a housing project.

Sanu grew up in the Nickerson Gardens — the largest housing project west of the Mississippi.

And what he remembers most isn’t the violence. It’s the candy lady.

Miss Sue. The community that built itself out of nothing because that’s what people do when the system fails them.
“The egg rolls were the bomb”, he says. And he means it as the highest possible compliment.

I remember being out on the floor keys and just feeling like I was failing my kids. I was failing as a wife, as a daughter, as a nurse. I was at the end of myself. Looking at the ocean. I just wanna go in the water and I don’t wanna come out.

She was a nurse who held dying patients’ hands. A warrior trained in martial arts. A woman built for crisis.

And she had nothing left.

Stage 11: Apotheosis — Death and Rebirth. The moment the hero reaches the absolute end of who they were — so something real can begin.

People were getting angry and attacking anyone who opposed the narrative. And I realized — we’re living in a world where people attach their identities to politics. To narratives. And that is a huge mistake.

She was a nurse. Her oath was simple: treat humans as humans. No matter their religion. Their politics. The color of their skin.

And she watched that oath be broken — by the very people who took it.

Stage 3 of the Hero’s Journey: Crossing the Threshold. The moment the hero enters a world where the rules they believed in no longer exist.

Alexandra didn’t just witness a health crisis. She witnessed a crisis of humanity. And what the clip doesn’t show is what it cost her to keep her oath when the system around her had abandoned it.

Hero’s Journey — Stage 8: The Road of Trials.

He trained his reaction time so hard
that any whistle — in class,
on the street, anywhere —
made his body snap into position.

Involuntarily.

That’s not an accident.
That’s what happens when you commit
to the work nobody sees.

The Road of Trials is not glamorous.
It’s repetition in the dark.
It’s training the mind
with the same obsession
you bring to the body.

Most people train the skill.
They skip the mind.
That’s the gap.

30 seats. Room for everyone.

As you grow,
you become a Ferrari.

Ferraris only have two seats.

The only people who can ride with you
are the ones keeping your pace
and your energy.

Growing is painful.
Not everyone is willing to do it.

I was arrested. They cut my hair. I was 18 years old in Iran under the Islamic Republic.

Sandra went back to Iran at eighteen on an arranged marriage. She still smoked. Still lived like herself — cassettes smuggled in from Italy, American magazines, her boy cousins in the dark playing cards. And the regime noticed.

She was arrested. Her hair was cut as punishment.

In the Hero’s Journey, Stage 9 is The Ordeal — the moment the hero faces something that cannot be prepared for, argued with, or escaped. The moment the world makes clear exactly how little it cares about who you are or what you believe.

What the clip doesn’t show is what she brought out of that experience. Not bitterness. Not the story of a victim.

Stage 2: The Call to Adventure.
The life looks right. Something inside knows it isn’t.

She had family.
She had a business running.
She had support.
Everything was there.

And she woke up every day
going through the motions.

I was living life — but not MY life.

That feeling is the Call.
Not every call is dramatic.
Some of them are quiet.
An emptiness that won’t go away
no matter how correct everything looks on paper.

She listened.
And left.
