Miss Sue wasn’t running a restaurant. She was making egg rolls in her kitchen and selling them out the back door of a housing project.
Sanu grew up in the Nickerson Gardens — the largest housing project west of the Mississippi.
And what he remembers most isn’t the violence. It’s the candy lady.
Miss Sue. The community that built itself out of nothing because that’s what people do when the system fails them.
“The egg rolls were the bomb”, he says. And he means it as the highest possible compliment.
What the clip doesn’t show is what Sanu built out of that same spirit — and why he says everything he’s become isn’t about him.
