The BVI National Surfing Championship on Saturday brought some of the best surfers from in and around the territory together to compete for prizes and places on the national team. Looking on from the shore, residents and visitors stopped what they were doing to watch the athletic artists paint the waves.

The first annual BVI National Surfing Championship had two contests for the men's division: an open and closed event. The Men's Open, like the contest for the four national surfing team places, was won by Rush Broderick, who took home $1,000 for the effort. In second place was Wes Markin, followed by Liam Brosnan and Zebedee Bamford.

Grace Brosnan won $1,000 for her top place finish in the BVI National Surfing Championship in the Women's Open division. The runner-up was Ariella Oliver, followed by Carol Schoonhoven and Victoria Rowlette.
