ST. THOMAS — Authorities are actively investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 28-year-old Matthew Gumbs on Sunday, March 9, in Estate Mariendahl, St. Thomas. According to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD), emergency responders received a 911 call at approximately 5:01 p.m. reporting a man found bleeding and unresponsive. The caller later relayed that the victim appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the unresponsive male, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Medical personnel also arrived at the scene and, after an assessment, declared the victim deceased at 5:14 p.m.
The victim was identified by family members as Matthew Gumbs.
The VIPD's Major Crimes Unit has launched a full investigation into the incident. As of now, no suspects have been named, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
