There’s an entire lost world buried beneath Antarctica — and it hasn’t seen sunlight in 34 million years.
Deep under the East Antarctic ice sheet, in a remote region known as Wilkes Land, scientists have uncovered something almost impossible to imagine: a vast, ancient landscape frozen in time. We’re talking about an area roughly the size of Maryland — hidden beneath more than a mile of solid ice, untouched since long before humans ever existed.
Using advanced satellite imaging and ice-penetrating radar, researchers have revealed a breathtaking scene below the surface: rugged mountain ranges, valleys plunging nearly 4,000 feet deep, and winding river systems that once flowed through a lush, green continent.
Because Antarctica wasn’t always the frozen desert we know today.
Millions of years ago, it was warm. It was alive. It was covered in forests.
And here’s the part that’s truly mind-blowing — that ancient world is still there, almost perfectly preserved.
Unlike most glaciers that slowly grind away everything beneath them, the ice above this region has remained incredibly stable for millions of years. Instead of destroying the land, it sealed it — like a natural time capsule, locking in a snapshot of Earth’s distant past.
Now, scientists are preparing to drill deep into the ice to extract ancient soil samples — tiny fragments that could completely transform our understanding of Earth’s climate history.
One core sample. Millions of years of secrets.
This is why science never stops amazing us.
