Obesity is considered a chronic disease that occurs when the number and size of fat cells in the body increases. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLB), about three-quarters of American adults over the age of 20 are overweight or obese, based on body mass index (BMI), and they may be at higher risk for other chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
