[DIPLOMATIC PROTOCOL] RULE #3
🚘 VEHICLE SEATING ARRANGEMENTS – STANDARDS THAT REFLECT RANK AND STATUS
In diplomatic practice, the seating arrangement in official vehicles, particularly automobiles, follows strict protocol to ensure respect, proper hierarchy, and ceremonial decorum.
🔹 The seat of highest honour is the rear seat on the right-hand side (determined by the direction of travel). This position is reserved for the guest of honor or the most senior official.
🔹 The second seat of honour is the rear seat on the left-hand side, designated for the host or an official of next seniority.
🔹 When three passengers occupy the rear seat, the third individual sits in the center seat, thereby preserving the positions of honor on both sides.
📌 Note: In countries where vehicles are left-hand drive (steering wheel on the right), the order of honour for seating is reversed accordingly.
🎯 Significance:
In diplomatic engagements, vehicle seating arrangements are not merely procedural details, but a precise and meaningful expression of respect, protocol, and the formal recognition of rank and status accorded to guests and counterparts.

The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for multilateral diplomacy, commemorating major anniversaries such as the 30th anniversary of Vietnam’s accession to ASEAN and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Join us as we reflect on Vietnam’s journey in multilateral diplomacy and the enduring relevance of multilateralism in today’s world, with insights from two distinguished speakers: Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, former Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, and Ambassador of Australia to Vietnam Gillian Bird.
