About a block up from where my wife and I live there is badminton mad family that sets up a net almost every evening. It always makes me smile when I walk or drive past and last night I stopped on my way back from the local market as Grandma took on her Grandson in the alleyway. It’s Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tet) and the alleyways are decorated with Vietnamese flags which I thought made a fantastic foreground element.

This is the last of the before and after retouching images that I’ll be sharing from my latest blog post (link in bio) about my recent shoot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort. For this dusk shot of The Common outdoor seating area the main issue was that the lights on the exterior of the building were going to cast light into the foreground of the image with their intensity on increasing as it got darker. To negate the issue I did some light painting on the furniture and in the trees before it got too dark. It was an overcast day so I replaced the flat and lifeless sky with a more interesting twilight sky that had some beautiful wispy clouds in it.

Another before and after retouching image from my latest blog post (link in bio) about my recent shoot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort. We shot this of the Premier Ocean Suite Living Room at sunrise which I was a little hesitant about as the early morning sunlight can be difficult to control. We arrived at 5:30am and the sky was dull but shortly after 6am the sun which was obscured by the back corner walls started to reflect from the mirrors in the back corner of the room and shafts of light bounced beautifully on the carpet. The final composite was built by blending images with the lights on, the lights off and flash exposures that I used to add shape to the furniture. On completion of the composite I wasn’t happy with the appearance of the palm trees in the bottom corner of the image so I decided to replace the view with an image that I had taken from the balcony. I positioned all of the elements so that they lined up as they had in the original image and I replaced the lifeless sky with a sky with a sky from an early morning image that I had taken in Kenya in 2019.

Another before and after retouching image from my latest blog post about my recent shoot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort. For this shot of the indoor lounge and bar area at The Common we had overcast weather and the tungsten lighting was overpowering on the furniture in the foreground. To give the furniture shape I lit each individual piece of furniture separately and combined them in post. Replacing the sky with completely blue sky would have been unrealistic for the lighting situation on the exterior so I just allowed a bit a blue to sky to come through in the area above the trees.

Another before and after retouching image from my latest blog post about my recent shoot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort. We had hazy skies for three straight days and for this shot of the Cove Bar & Grill restaurant and pool the sky lit up a hazy pink. It didn’t feel right so I swapped it out with a blue twilight sky with a hint of red in the clouds.

I’ve got a new blog up on my website which takes a behind the scenes look into a fantastic interior and exterior architectural shoot that I shot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort earlier this year in Hoi An. I didn’t have much luck with the weather during the shoot and I ended up replacing most of the skies so I have discussed how I went about this in the post.

A behind the scenes look into an interior and exterior architectural project that I shot for New World Hoiana Beach Resort in Hoi An, Vietnam in early 2023. In this post I explain how I approach replacing skies when the weather doesn’t play along during a shoot.

I've just finished a new blog post about a feature length documentary film project that I started working on way back in 2016. “Together” is the story of how after 40 years apart 3 sisters find each other, reconnect with their cultural roots, and help each other heal from a legacy of abuse.

It's without doubt the most satisfying project that I have worked on and the film’s director Yasmin is currently running what has been a successful kickstarter campaign to raise funds to get the film closer to completion. Take a read and it would be fantastic if you could contribute.
