❔ ❔ ❔From the 15th century to the late 18th century, Hoi An used to be the largest trading center in Vietnam and one of the busiest commercial ports in South East Asia. It was indeed a melting pot of cultures, a conjunction where East meets West. So why could a place of world elite convergence like that have stood intact through history? ❔ ❔ ❔
➡ In the early 19th century, due to the stilting up of the river mouth (Thu Bon river) and the rapid development of Danang mechanic port, Hoi An lost its status as the major economic trading center in the region. This historic opportunity, however, hindered the city’s modernization process and rendered it to fall into oblivion. That is the reason why today we have Hoi An Ancient Town – a UNESCO-recognized World Cultural Heritage 🏰

Its reputation has really ascended across Vietnamese borders and become a globally favorite dish 🍞 🍞 🍞 Even though a loaf of Hoi An bread may seem simple and frugal, the preparation process can be quite meticulous. If you have ever tried the bread before, you will realize that there are many kinds of stuffing and dressing inside. From fresh vegetables, pâté, beef, pork gravy to special sauces that resemble mayonnaise, Hoi An bread is indeed the convergence of culinary elite 🏆 🏆 🏆 And you will be surprised to know that a serving of bread like that takes away from your pocket only US$1 or so 😲 😲 😲

Hoi An is indeed a heaven of street food with innumerable dishes served at reasonable prices. In this very first album about Hoi An street food, we proudly bring you “Bánh bèo” (steamed rice cake or water fern cake). This dish is very popular in the central Vietnam but here in Hoi An, it possesses a unique taste, completely different from anywhere else. The water fern cake is often served in a small porcelain bowl with a wet topping made with minced shrimp, pork, spring onion and dry topping made from deep-fried “Cao lau” noodles. Can you guess the price for it? Just 2,000 VND for each bowl, which means that you can have 10 bowls for only US$1.

There are various vendors along the street offering this kind of specialty but we have short-listed the choices and these are the three most favored places for “Bánh bèo”:

- Aunt Tai’s with her mobile “Bánh bèo” cart. She often pulls her cart through Ly Thuong Kiet, Ngo Gia Tu, Tran Hung Dao and finishes on Nguyen Hue Street. Her business starts at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

- Aunt Bay’s: at the corner of the old wall on Hoang Van Thu street.

- Aunt Lan’s at 62 Phan Dinh Phung (near Tan An market), opens at around 4 pm in the afternoon.
