My two-year-old son refuses to let our housekeeper go—he insists on staying with her. But my mother refuses to acknowledge what we’ve built together.
The soft glow of the afternoon sun spilled across the park, bathing the playground in warmth and turning every slide and swing into something almost magical.
Children’s laughter drifted through the air, bright and effortless. Among them, a tiny boy named Noah—just two years old—wobbled across the grass, his little steps uneven as he chased after the one person who made him feel completely safe.
“Emma!” he called out, his voice full of pure joy.
Emma Carter, just twenty-four, turned at the sound. Dressed in a simple light-blue uniform that marked her as a housekeeper, she looked anything but ordinary in that moment. The way her expression softened, the way her arms opened instantly—it was filled with something deeper.
But today was not like the others.
Her smile trembled.
Tears quietly traced down her face, no matter how hard she tried to hide them.
She held Noah tighter than usual, burying her face in his hair as if trying to hold onto something slipping away.
“Hey, sweetheart,” she murmured, her voice unsteady. “Be careful… you might fall.”
But the warning wasn’t really for him.
It was for herself.
Nearby, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb, its glossy surface catching the sunlight. The door opened, and Adrian Walker stepped out.
At thirty-five, Adrian carried an effortless authority. His tailored suit fit flawlessly, his posture was composed, and his expression calm—but his sharp eyes missed nothing.
Noah saw him immediately.
“Daddy!” he shouted, wriggling free from Emma’s arms and running toward him.
Adrian’s face softened as he lifted his son into his arms.
But Noah didn’t relax.
Instead, he twisted around urgently, pointing back toward Emma.
“Daddy! I want her! I want Emma to be my mommy!”
The words echoed with the kind of honesty only a child could deliver.
Adrian froze.
For a split second, everything seemed to shift.
Then he followed Noah’s gaze—and saw Emma.
Her eyes were swollen.
Her cheeks still damp.
She looked like someone barely holding herself together.
His concern replaced his shock instantly.
Carrying Noah, he walked toward her.
“Emma,” he said gently. “What happened? Why are you crying?”
She lowered her eyes, trying to steady herself, but when she finally spoke, the words came rushing out.
“Sir… your mother let me go,” she said, her voice trembling. “She said I wasn’t doing my job well… that I was becoming a distraction. But I promise—I love Noah. I care for him like he’s my own. I would never—”
Her voice broke completely.
