Los Angeles casting opportunity for HOW TO RIDE A BIKE, an upcoming Vietnamese American short film project from director Bao Nguyen (THE STRINGER, THE GREATEST NIGHT IN POP, BTS: THE RETURN), in collaboration with Cate Blanchett's Displacement Film Fund (DFF), shooting in Los Angeles, California, USA in August 2026.

Storyline: A Vietnamese refugee raising his son alone in Southern California has never learned to ride a bicycle. When eight-year-old Tommy begs him to teach him, Linh tries - and fails. Rather than admit the truth, he secretly enrolls in an adult cycling class, where he finds himself among strangers whose lives, like his, were shaped by what they never got the chance to learn. A film about the quiet things displacement takes, and a father and son learning to ride together.

Project: How to Ride a Bike (working title) (U.S./Vietnam)
“A Vietnamese refugee father who never learned to ride a bike tries to teach his young son, and when he fails, begins learning in secret, confronting a lifelong shame he has carried since boyhood.”

Rithy Panh and Akuol de Mabior will also make short films under the second round of the grant scheme backed by the star and the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund.

A Variety Cannes exclusive! EAST is excited to continue the journey with Kontribute & writer-director Nguyễn Thiên Ân in developing his Festival de Cannes nominated short film into a feature. But first, we are looking forward to its world premiere on May 22nd!

East Films and Kontribute are developing Nguyễn Thiên Ân's debut feature, adapted from the first Vietnamese short to compete at Cannes.

"Director Marie Jamora (“What Isn’t There”) is set to direct “Imprint” from a script by Charlene Sawit-Esguerra, with Tan Si En of Momo Film Co. and Anderson Le of East Films as producing partners. Actor Liza Soberano, set to appear in DreamWorks’ upcoming “Forgotten Island,” is attached as executive producer. The supernatural thriller follows a Filipino-American woman who returns to the Philippines after her father’s murder and discovers a psychic ability she must use to track a serial killer moving between the physical and spirit worlds."

Night Market Studios debuts four-film Asian genre slate at the Cannes market with 'The Conjuring' writers as executive producers.

Ngày xửa ngày xưa, Đạo diễn Nguyễn Thiên Ân từng chia sẻ rằng ảnh muốn làm một phim hài slaptick action comedy đỉnh cao với cỗ máy ốc sên, nhà bác học điên và biệt thự nổ tung,… Nhưng ý tưởng nghe có vẻ thật xa tầm với, nên thôi, mình gói ghém nó lại trong hình hài của phim ngắn “Giấc Mơ Là Ốc Sên”, với sự hỗ trợ từ Dự án phim ngắn CJ - CJ Short Film, sản xuất bởi Kontribute, Command+Art và EAST Films.
