The human race needs a loving hand. Not a permissive hand and not a hand that strikes out. But it needs a hand that soothes and leads and does so without a selfish motive. Our condition is a result of disobedience. Every rule has been broken, every law, written and unwritten, has been ignored. It has all made for imbalances, injustices, broken hearts and less stability. Where is the loving hand? It is our own. It begins with the individual who is willing to let others exist, to forgive and to be forgiven. No doubt the bad will get worse, the good will get better - and all in all it is a personal decision. ~ By peace our condition has been improved in the pursuits of civilized life. ~

Few things are mind-and-spirit-adjusting like putting our hand to a job that has been waiting too long. The bigger the job, the better our concentration. Work keeps the hands busy and frees the mind from raw nerves and injured feelings. A time to talk will come – if it is needed at all. Sometimes busy hands like walking feet can do away with things thought to be unsolvable. Decide to do a thing that no one else can do – a specific move away from pain. It can set the wheel to turn – maybe slowly at first – but soon you'll be on top again. ~ If white man wants to live in peace with Indian he can live in peace. ~

"One is not born a Tewa but rather one is made a Tewa... Once made, one has to work hard continuously throughout one's life to remain a Tewa." --Alfonso Ortiz, SAN JUAN PUEBLO– Being Indian is being spiritual. It is not the color of our skin. Being Indian is how we think. We need to learn our culture, our language, our dances, our traditions and customs. It is one thing to know these things, but another to live them. We need to spend time with the Elders and get their guidance. We need to go to the mountains, woods and desert to pray. Being spiritual is the way for us to think right. Walking the Red Road and thinking right is the greatest gift we can give to our children. Grandfather, help me to Walk the Talk.

In this age of freethinkers, many a business and political genius has asked, "Who can I join hands with that will do me the most good?" Almost any aggressive person can get his feet on the ladder of success. It is keeping them there that gets into artfulness. Because there is a time to think and act independently, a person's footing may get very shaky and very temporary. A law of cause and effect works minute by minute, and that simply says we get only when we give and we reap only what we sow. No one else can do for us what we have to do for ourselves. And no one else can keep us sharp and honest and respectful. It is our job. ~ Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all. ~

Leave yourself a choice. It is a sorry state of affairs when a person's life becomes so regimented that it is impossible to make even one change in plans. There is a story about a gentleman who kept a record in minute detail of his living and every cent he earned so that he could make a trip abroad. The record keeping became such an obsession that when he could make the trip he took along crackers to keep from eating in the dining room aboard ship. The journey was nearly over before he discovered the price of his meals was included in the fare. How much do we miss by refusing to accept the bounty of choices? "If only" and "I wish" are so over used. We bind ourselves daily by refusing to recognize the volume of opportunities open to each of us. All of life is not free, but there is much available for our personal selection. Dr. William S. Sadler wrote of a woman who was so orderly and systematic in her living that she inquired of her minister how to go about dying since she had never done it before. Living in a systematic world is possible, but there are limits to what we can prepare for and about which to be orderly. Daily we meet and settle many small emergencies, and some not so small. And it is our developed ability to meet these things successfully and on the spur of the moment that makes a well-rounded individual. But the steady, uniform methods of doing things do not necessarily mean a person is ready to meet every situation in life. In fact, such living often makes change practically impossible when change is sorely needed. Order is heaven's first law. But order means first things first. A place for everything and everything in its place. Then, if we've learned how to live, we never have to worry about the art of dying gracefully.

"Everything I know I learned by listening and watching." --Vernon Cooper, LUMBEE– Sometimes my mind is talking so fast about so many different things that I can't slow it down. All day long I am judging and making assumptions about everything. Great Spirit, help me this day to slow down. Help me to listen - quietly. Help me to watch carefully. Help me to listen to my inner voice. Let me listen and watch only the thing You would have me observe. Guide my eyes and my ears to be focused on You. Grandfather, love me today and teach me to be quiet.

The Story of the Dragonfly's Flight
In the heart of the sacred forest, where the trees whispered ancient secrets, there lived a dragonfly. The dragonfly, with its vibrant blue wings and intricate markings, was not just any ordinary creature; it was the messenger between the worlds of earth and sky. It fluttered from flower to flower, gathering wisdom from the winds and sharing it with those who were willing to listen.
One day, a young child wandered deep into the forest, feeling lost and uncertain about their place in the world. They had heard stories of the dragonfly and its connection to the spirits, but they never imagined they would meet it face to face.
As the child walked along the riverbank, they noticed a flash of blue in the sunlight. The dragonfly hovered before them, its wings shimmering like liquid light. It circled the child once, then landed on a nearby branch, its eyes gleaming with a knowing look.
The child, curious, asked, “Why do you fly so freely? You move with such grace, without fear or hesitation. How do you know where to go?”
The dragonfly, in its quiet way, fluttered its wings in the air, sending ripples across the surface of the river. With a voice as soft as the wind, it spoke:
“I do not know where I go, nor do I need to. I follow the breeze, trusting in its guidance. I do not worry about the path ahead, for the winds always lead me where I need to be. Fear is not a part of my flight, for I know that every turn, every flutter, brings me closer to my purpose.”
The child sat silently, watching the dragonfly’s wings glisten in the light. The message was clear: Life, like the flight of the dragonfly, is not about knowing every step in advance but trusting in the journey itself. The winds of change would always guide them, even through uncertainty.
As the dragonfly flew off into the horizon, the child felt a sense of peace wash over them. The forest, once a place of confusion, now felt like a sanctuary of endless possibilities. With the dragonfly’s wisdom in their heart, the child stepped forward, no longer afraid of the unknown.
