Aukwai to attend FIFA Referees seminar with a chance to officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026

Zurich gave the green light to Solomon Islands’ top FIFA badge referee Ben Aukwai to attend the Preseason of Elite Referees seminar in Argentina this month.

Aukwai and New Zealand referee Campbell-Kirk Alexander Waugh are the 2 candidates considered by the OFC Referees Department among the 6 FIFA Confederation referees – and the 37-year-old is on the verge of creating history, the road to officiating at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

He will be the second FIFA badge referee from the Solomon Islands to be given the opportunity for a chance to officiate on the big stage should he be successful.

“I’m so honored and humbled to be selected and given this lifetime opportunity,” Aukwai expressed.

“It will be a huge achievement for me in my refereeing career because I will learn new things from all the top FIFA instructors and referees around the world, and I’m proud to represent SIFF and the country.

Aukwai left the country earlier this week to Sydney, Australia before traveling to South America on January 13th.

He was selected out of 6 FIFA badge referees in the region based on their quality and the performances delivered at FIFA tournaments as well as at other international and domestic competitions.

There will be over 50 trios worldwide to attend the seminar.

OFC will hope for 2 trios (allocated space) for a high chance of representation, as there will be also an increase of participating teams from 32 to 48 countries at the next FIFA World Cup.

Possible candidates will be shortlisted by the FIFA Referees Committee which will continue through intensive preparations in the next 2 years.

SIFF Referee Development Officer Hamilton Siau confirmed saying that Aukwai’s representation is a milestone for all referees in the country.

“Ben’s participation will reflect positively on what the federation has been doing throughout the past years. In terms of competitions, national teams’ performance, administration, and the refereeing quality we produced,” says Siau.

For Aukwai it will be a shot at glory at the highest level of football in the world.

“This trip means a lot to me, and it’s a big achievement for me individually to rub shoulders with the world’s best and I’m proud to represent my country and Oceania,” he said.

“I want to thank the OFC Referees Department, SIFF Referees Department, and my referee colleagues for their support and encouragement. Also, my family for their prayers and support.

“I will continue to thank God for the strength, wisdom, and knowledge that he has given me to reach this point in my career.

The rise and rise of New Zealand Football's next big talent Callum McCowatt

Sunday's ISPS Handa Premiership final might have been Callum McCowatt's final bow on these shores for some time — and that would be great for New Zealand football.
McCowatt is a young man in a hurry and one of the best local products for some time.
His coach, former Leeds and All Whites defender Danny Hay, has no doubts, saying he will be an important player for the national team for "years to come".
His performance in Eastern Suburbs' 3-0 win over Team Wellington was superb, and even aged 19, McCowatt has probably outgrown the football scene in this country.

Manchester City 2-0 Cardiff City

Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

They were quickly ahead when Kevin De Bruyne squeezed in a vicious shot from a tight angle on six minutes, before Leroy Sane drilled in a second just before half-time. City dominated the second half but somehow failed to add to their advantage with Cardiff keeper Neil Etheridge pulling off a string of fine saves.

Valencia 2-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid's harrowing campaign continued as they fell to a ninth defeat in La Liga and their first since coach Zinedine Zidane returned as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 away by a resurgent Valencia on Wednesday.
Portugal international Goncalo Guedes fired Valencia into the lead in the 35th minute with a thumping shot from inside the area which was too powerful for Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Madrid had played well until conceding, but lost momentum after the goal and Valencia continued to threaten into the second half, finally doubling their lead with a header by defender Ezequiel Garay from a corner in the 83rd.
Karim Benzema headed in a consolation goal for Madrid in stoppage time, shortly after Zidane's side had a penalty decision overturned after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled Sergio Ramos was offside.
Valencia, who have reached the Copa del Rey final and the quarterfinals of the Europa League, have Champions League qualification in their sights after climbing up to fifth in the table on 46 points, one behind fourth-placed Getafe.
Madrid are stuck in third on 57 points, 13 behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and five behind city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Eastern Suburbs win NZ Premiership title

Eastern Suburbs have won the ISPS Handa Premiership title for the first time after delivering an impressive performance to defeat two-time champions Team Wellington 3-0 this at QBE Stadium in Auckland.
The Danny Hay-coached team went into the final as the younger and less experienced of the two sides but showed little sign of nerves as they made history by claiming their first national league title since 1971.
Golden boot winner Callum McCowatt once again underlined his huge potential on New Zealand’s biggest stage with two goals of the highest quality to secure the win and take his season tally to 20.
McCowatt was in the middle of most of the Lily Whites’ best attacking play as he, Elijah Just and Andre de Jong caused Team Wellington’s back three plenty of problems throughout the 90 minutes.
The win sees Eastern Suburbs not only claim the ISPS Handa Premiership for the first time – their previous title triumph was in the old national league – but also secures a historic place in the OFC Champions League for next season alongside minor premiers Auckland City.
The Lily Whites got off the perfect start in the seventh minute when they deservedly took the lead. Inside Team Wellington’s 18-yard box, Dalton Wilkins produced a clever lob to find McCowatt and the 19-year-old hit a sweetly-struck volley into the far corner via a heavy deflection.
Unfortunately for McCowatt, the strike was initially off target so will go down as an own goal, robbing him of a hat-trick.
There was more to come from Suburbs with Just, de Jong and Owen Parker-Price all having efforts on goal in a dominant opening half hour.
If there was any doubt as to who scored the opener, there was none whatsoever for Suburbs’ second. In the 36th minute, McCowatt curled a superb effort from the edge of the area which found the top right corner and gave Team Wellington goalkeeper Scott Basalaj no chance.
Wellington grew in the game as the half wore on but could not create any clear-cut chances and the Lily Whites went into half-time well in control.
The first team to score after half-time was going to be decisive and Suburbs picked up from where they left off.
On another long-ranging counter-attack, McCowatt found himself in space once again. He summed up his options before hammering home a quality left-foot strike that found the net, again via a hefty deflection but this time the goal was McCowatt’s.
It was a body blow to Team Wellington’s title chances and one from which they never recovered.
Just before the goal, Wellington midfielder and former All White Aaron Clapham was forced off after a sickening head knock but there was a pleasing update as he soon regained consciousness and was taken to hospital to receive treatment.
The loss of Clapham was another setback for Jose Figueira’s team and, whatever they threw at Suburbs, the Lily Whites handled with composure and were seldom troubled by their more experienced opponents. Youth prevailed on this occasion as Eastern Suburbs welcomed in an exciting new era for the club by claiming some long-awaited silverware.
The day was made even more memorable for McCowatt when he received the Steve Sumner Trophy as player of the final. It’s the second consecutive season in which he has claimed the honour after also doing likewise when scoring the winner in Auckland City colours against Team Wellington last season.
The winning coach Danny Hay couldn’t hide his delight after the match.
“Obviously really pleased, but I think more than that I think it’s a good day for the game in this country.
“Not necessarily that Eastern Suburbs won but the fact that we have so many young Kiwi players showing what they are capable of on a big stage so in terms of youth development it’s a good day for us”, Hay said.
“We pride ourselves on our defensive record, that’s what lot of the good stuff going forward is built on the back of that.
“But people put a lot of emphasis on defending and attacking but really it’s fluid it’s one thing, they very much interlinked when we try to boss possession and not give opposition teams that many opportunities.
“In general I thought it was a thorough performance for the entire time we played, so I’m really pleased for the players, they deserve it because the way they have gone about trying to improve,” The Eastern Suburbs coach explained.
