A special post, for a special milestone.
Last year in January, while we were in Auckland for the Trans Pacific, on the last day of the tournament our women’s were asked to do duty, so we came outside and begged Lauina to R1 and take the younger boys to do lines because, we, the girls, are lowkey fealofa’i chat😂
anyways, what was a simple game, became an opportunity of a lifetime for our coach.
This is where Lauina crossed paths with the amazing Mary Kerekere. He was R1 and she was his R2. I guess throughout their game she notices that this tall Samoan man, really knew something.
After their game, she consulted with some of the people running the Trans Pacific, asking them about this person she had just worked with, and the common response was “Oh yes, thats Lauina, he has been reffing in Samoa for years”
Long story short, Mary approached Lauina and asked if he would like to officiate R1 the Div 2 Mens Finals, and that would give her the opportunity to assess him.
Lauina passed his assessment in New Zealand. We left NZ before he could get his badge, but how fitting that it would arrive just in time for our I’a Sa Championship prize giving.
This Regional Oceania level referee badge now allows you to officiate in NZ and at any Oceania games including the Pacific games. (someone correct me if I’m botsing it😅)
