Tribute to Mr Roach
I needed a moment to process the departure of Mr. Roach, as death is inevitable and, at some point, we must all answer its call. But his passing left me feeling blank and without words.
In the days since, all I've been able to write is, "What a man, what a career, what a legacy." Undoubtedly, Bennette's name will echo in the halls of Montserrat and, quite frankly, in Caribbean history for many decades to come due to his unwavering commitment to various sectors—not just journalism but also sports, commerce, and others.
If you, like me, paused to truly listen to him, you would realize that he was more than what was often said or what his actions suggested. Bennette was a walking library of Montserrat's current and past history, and if you have ever visited the website of his newspaper, you would understand what I mean.
His style of questioning at press conferences frustrated many, but I took the time to listen to him on several occasions. I realized that he often made it clear to his subjects, "I know what I'm talking about, so come prepared."
Bennette, like me, was one of the most disliked journalists, and with that came disrespect. However, he pressed on, driven by his passion, which made him a consummate professional.
Thank you, Bennette, for carrying Montserrat on your shoulders. Thank you for your unwavering work and commitment. Now, rest easy, Bennette—take your rest!
