THREE SUSPECTS ARRESTED AT NONESI MALL

SPHOKUHLE NONGAUZA

A joint law-enforcement operation at Nonesi Mall in Komani has led to the arrest of three suspects aged between 36 and 42, following an investigation into a reported kidnapping case from Cala.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 2 September, by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI), Komani Crime Intelligence, Komani Dog Unit and Komani Redguard Security Company.

Police allege that officers spotted the suspects with three victims inside a white Toyota Avanza with Gauteng registration plates at around midday.

The suspects were allegedly about to withdraw money from one of the victims’ accounts at a Capitec ATM when police intervened.

One suspect was reportedly armed with a firearm.

Police allege that the suspects resisted arrest, with the armed suspect allegedly charging towards officers. Warning shots were fired during the confrontation.

A bystander was allegedly struck in the right arm by a stray bullet and was rushed to Frontier Hospital for medical attention.

The three alleged victims, aged 26, 36 and 51, were rescued. Police said all three are beneficiaries of the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

Chris Hani District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended the joint team for the operation.

"The joint team of law enforcement agencies is given a thumbs up for the sterling job,” said Adolph.

The three suspects are expected to appear before the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 4 September, facing charges of possession of illegal fi****ms and resisting arrest.

Investigations are continuing.
