The Greenham Common Women’s Peace Encampment was a nearly two decade long, women-only protest at a US military base in Greenham, England. Over the course of 19 years, more than 70,000 women—many of whom were le***ans—lived in camps surrounding the base. They were protesting the presence of nuclear cruise missiles deployed there by the US and NATO, in response to rising tensions with the Soviet Union.

More than that, they were there to protect the sanctity of life on earth, and to challenge the ways in which patriarchy threatened it. Their very presence countered the notion that women couldn’t survive without men, while their daily protests around the base sent the message that women would not sit idly by while men made decisions that threatened their bodies and their lives.

There were no real rules for these daily actions, no organizing committees or planning meetings. The only guidelines were:

1. Be nonviolent.
2. Be as annoying as possible.
