Impressions of the recently opened National Eighty Years' War Museum (Nationaal Museum Tachtigjarige Oorlog) in Groenlo, the Netherlands.

Opened in April 2025, NMTO is a highly interactive museum that is very well put together and beautifully presented in the Calixtus Church.

You move through the museum along an elevated walkway as a roving reporter with a headset and microphone "interviewing" participants from both sides of the conflict to form your own opinion.

It tells a part of the story of the Eighty Years' War in ingenious ways but the objects and presentations focus mainly on the military equipment, ordinary citizens, the East Indies, and the area of Groenlo in particular.

Descriptions and displays of some major events and people are (still?) missing, and while I found the selection of the major players curious at times, I feel the NMTO gives an impressive overview of the conflict suitable for older children and adults.

♿️ The church, ticket office, and bathroom are fully accessible for wheelchair users, while some displays may be out of view if you must remain seated.

De Stokholm on the Wolwevershaven in Dordrecht, Zuid-Holland, the Netherlands, was built in 1730 for Johan Anthonij Bruijn, a merchant born in Stockholm who named the building in honor of his hometown.

It was a sugar refinery, one of the most advanced of the era, with five floors above ground level, multiple drying areas, and six copper sugar pans.

Financial troubles led to bankruptcy in 1737. It was sold and turned into a grain and seed warehouse.

It is currently an office building and is a Rijksmonument.

Museum Het Bolwerk (The Bulwark) in IJzendijke, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Zeeland, the Netherlands has a special exhibit about Maurits of Nassau, and also Alessandro Farnese, and Ambrogio Spinola, which runs until the end of the year.

The museum specializes in the Spanish-States defensive lines during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648).

📚I picked up some nice new books in the museum store, as well. 🥰

📽 You can check out Defragged History's deep-dive series about the Eighty Years' War on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.

Geschiedenis Ontrafeld ( ), the Dutch arm of Defragged History, will soon launch the Dutch-language version of the series on YouTube.
