A lot of water is wasted in cleaning because there is an assumption that the more water we use, the cleaner it will be.

When having a shower for example, once the soap residue has washed off, the shower you are standing under is not making you any cleaner, it's just passing and draining away.

The same principle applies to cleaning systems in manufacturing.

Over-cleaning = over-wasting.
Optimizing your Clean-in-Place systems can cut water and energy use by up to 30%.

Refer to OEM instructions, the quality control team should work with the chemical & equipment suppliers to optimize cleaning systems.

Same hygiene. Less waste of water, energy and a hugh saving on utility bills.

What's the most recent change you've noticed at work to reduce waste going to landfill?

At a recent site visit, I noticed new signage placed on bins that make it clear how to segregate food waste from trash bins.

Compressed air is one of the most expensive utilities in manufacturing? Manufacturing plants like to focus on big projects—but it’s the small leaks that drain profits.

A single compressed air leak can waste thousands of kwh energy every year and increase electricity bills.

Find it. Fix it. Save instantly.

One of the best ways to reduce waste is to offer employees resuable items. The next time you are doing a giveaway, purchase practical promotional items. Water bottles, travel mugs and lunchboxes are a good way to reduce waste from canteens. Replacing single use disposables will reduce plastic waste and improve the overall procurement budget.

Amazon's recent water use numbers to cool its data centers is making headlines. "Amazon announced that its global data center operations used just 0.12 liters of water per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh) in 2025, a rate that’s over 7x more efficient than the industry average of 0.84 L/kWh." The numbers go into billions of litres of water used annually.

This is one business, imagine how much water is needed to cool all data centers!

AI is not going away, therefore the need to develop more data centers will continue.

Water scarcity is already an issue in many countries, so how can data centers continue to operate without impacting the local community?

Optimize free air cooling, optimize water reuse, fine tune existing processes for efficiency.

We tend to be mindful at home when using resources. We keep to a minimum and don't crank the heat up or use more water than we need.

At work, we sometimes do it without thinking.
Same action—bigger impact.

Small water leaks, even drips add up to a lot of water wastage when left unchecked. This is a common and ongoing issue found in manufacturing plants.

How do you fix it? Set up a preventative maintenance plan to ensure they are found quickly, reported and fixed in a timely manner.

Using more water, energy, and materials than necessary increases operating costs and reduces profitability.

Every litre of water consumed, every kilowatt-hour of energy used, and every kilogram of waste generated comes with a cost to purchase, manage, and dispose of.

By reducing consumption and preventing waste, organizations can lower utility bills, decrease disposal costs, improve efficiency, and free up resources that can be invested in employees, equipment, and business growth.
