The reality in Liberia is that many young people are being blamed for going astray, yet the conditions around them are not supportive of growth and discipline. There are no youth and children recreation centers where they can develop social skills, no job or part-time job opportunities to build responsibility, no exchange programs to broaden their mindset, and no national educational competitions or talent hunt programs to motivate and recognize potential. The absence of these opportunities is directly linked to frustration and hopelessness among the youth, which in turn is being misinterpreted as laziness or waywardness.

If we want to see a change, then society must realize that development is not achieved by criticism but by investment in the future generation. Youth need to be engaged in meaningful activities, provided with safe spaces for recreation, and supported with programs that build their talents and careers. When awareness campaigns, skill-based initiatives, and rehabilitation opportunities are combined with employment pathways, young people are more likely to embrace discipline and contribute positively to nation-building. The truth is clear: if Liberia provides the right platforms, the same youth who are being blamed today will become the nation’s greatest strength tomorrow.

The fight against sh**ha in Liberia should not stop at mere prohibition, as the issue goes beyond flavored smoke; it should serve as a wake-up call for the government and society to be more proactive in tackling substance abuse as a whole. Instead of focusing narrowly on banning sh**ha, the emphasis should be on enforcing existing drug laws, investing in public awareness campaigns that educate young people on the dangers of all forms of substance use, and establishing well-equipped rehabilitation centers across the country to support recovery and reintegration. By combining strong enforcement with education and accessible rehabilitation, Liberia can shift from reactive bans to a sustainable and holistic approach that addresses the root causes of addiction, protects future generations, and builds a healthier society.
