Multiple TDCJ Officers Injured in Walker County Crash Involving Transport Van

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Several correctional officers with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) were injured Thursday morning in a two-vehicle collision involving a TDCJ transport van and a pickup truck in Walker County.

The crash occurred on FM 980, just north of Huntsville, near FM 2628. According to TDCJ officials, six TDCJ staff members were onboard the van at the time of the crash. No inmates were being transported during the incident.

Emergency responders arrived on scene quickly. One correctional officer was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, while four others were transported by ambulance to local medical facilities. Details regarding the nature and severity of their injuries have not been released.

Following the crash, FM 980 was temporarily shut down in both directions, causing significant traffic delays in the area. The roadway was later reopened around 10:30 a.m. on the same day.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no further information has been released about the condition of the officers or the other vehicle involved.

Per Walker County constables office the accident involved a TDCJ transport van and a pickup truck.

UPDATE: Patients have all been extricated and transferred to either waiting ambulances or medical helicopters. Fire department is clearing the scene and DPS should be clearing the accident shortly. Continue to expect delays for a while longer.

A Medical Helicopter has been called and will landing at the Crabbs Prarie Fire station on Fm2628.

Avoid the area.

A strong thunderstorm is moving into the area from the north/northwest. You can expect strong squall line winds and heavy rainfall. This storm is moving Southeast at 40mph with 40 to 50mph gusts.

I45 NB just north of Huntsville.

UPDATE: According to TXDOT, the roadway is clear, and traffic is moving normally. Please continue to drive safe as road conditions are still favorable for accidents.

Reports say that only one lane is open. Witnesses are saying that a truck left the roadway and hit a tree with possible entrapment.

Use caution in the area.

140pm UPDATE: TXDOT maps are showing traffic is beginning to move. HWY 75 From 2989 to 1696 and into town is heavily congested. Please use caution and continue to expect delays.

UPDATE: TXDOT says they anticipate the roadway to reopen by 3pm due to extensive cleanup.

I-45 southbound is CLOSED at the Madison county line due to a traffic incident involving an overturned 18-wheeler, as reported by TXDOT. The freeway may be closed for an extended period, and drivers should plan accordingly.

Law Enforcement and Fire are closing Hwy 19 for a helicopter landing zone in response to a major accident in the area.

Final Update: both suspects are in custody, one person was flown to the hospital. Expect lengthy delays as they work to clear the scene and conduct investigations.

Update: according to sources, two suspects have fled the scene and DPS has a helicopter enroute.
