This is the era of my childhood.

A giant bread loaf sign in 1973... right at home in an era when America’s highways were dotted with oversized coffee cups, clown heads, rockets, and neon stars.

Born out of car culture, suburban sprawl, and fierce roadside competition, businesses had to shout the loudest to be seen. Signs weren’t just signs, they were absolute spectacles.

Fiberglass, neon, animation, and towering sculptures became the tools of the trade, often borrowing from Googie and Mid-Century Modern design.

With space-age flair, bold motion, and exaggerated shapes, the rule was simple: the wilder the better because your job was to grab the attention of a family flying past in a station wagon.

I visited Black Elm Coffee Shop, in Hendersonville. I had my first pumpkin spice latte in a long time and this one may be the best.

The espresso was excellent and complimented the pumpkin, which tasted real and balanced well with the sweetness.

Stop in and try one.

Description:
The first thing I noticed about the cortado was a nutty flavor. The espresso was robust without being bitter and was smooth on the palate.

The Salty Lumberjack was more decadent but not overly sweet. I really enjoyed the flavor combinations in it.

The muffin was also delicious.

I’d highly recommend Historic Perk. They offer good food and drinks and it’s in a beautiful place.

Description:
This cortado had a rich espresso flavor that shone through. I’d highly recommend it.

Plus I like the barista’s dog hanging out.

Today we used the French press to try this coffee from Cafe Kreyol.

This coffee is not your typical coffee. The fruitiness of it is very aromatic and also obvious in the taste. It wasn’t my favorite but I still liked it. Everyone else that did the tasting with me disliked it.

I like other coffees by Cafe Kreyol and I like the adventurous spirit that they bring into their products.

I bought this Costa Rican coffee recently. I’ve been enjoying it.

Today we did a formal cupping of it. We all agreed that it’s stellar coffee with a nutty first taste and a nice floral finish.

I highly recommend this coffee, and Garage Coffee Roastery & Cafe.
