Ruby Wax has survived far more than the jungle.

Born to Jewish parents who fled the N***s, Ruby learned early what fear, displacement and survival really mean. From the Royal Shakespeare Company – where Alan Rickman spotted her extraordinary talent – to becoming Britain’s sharpest interviewer, she built a career that made her a household name.

But at the height of her success, depression hit.
So Ruby rebuilt from scratch.

She studied mindfulness at Oxford, founded the Frazzled Café charity, became a bestselling author, and has spent years transforming our understanding of mental health. Her story is proof that reinvention isn’t a luxury – it’s a lifeline.

So, yes… she’s currently Queen of the Jungle.
But Ruby’s real crown is resilience earned the hard way.

I had the great pleasure of having Ruby on the Crisis What Crisis? Podcast - her insights were exceptional, I’ll post a link in the description…

Resilience Radar – moments, people, and stories that remind us of the power of the human spirit.

Today she’s a best-selling author, famed journalist, inspirational podcaster, and a charity founder. Yet at her lowest, Bryony Gordon battled constantly with OCD, addiction, and depression.

One day, out running on Clapham Common, she heard a line that changed her life:

“All people belong to a we – except me.”

So she sent a tweet: “Who wants to go for a walk?”

Twenty strangers showed up. They talked. They laughed. They healed – together.
That single walk became Mental Health Mates – now a nationwide community helping thousands feel less alone.

A reminder that resilience doesn’t always begin with a plan. Sometimes it’s just about having the courage to take action.

Not all tech billionaires buy yachts.

The late Dame Stephanie “Steve” Shirley fled the N***s at five, built a software empire in a male-dominated industry, and then gave away almost all her wealth to autism research and support.

Her life proves that sometimes your greatest crisis can be your destiny.

We’re so sad to hear of the passing of one of life’s more remarkable characters, known to many simply as “Steve.”

When Steve joined us on Crisis What Crisis? late last year, she opened our eyes to a mindset of pure inspiration.

Arriving in Britain as a five-year-old refugee on the Kindertransport, fleeing the N***s, she went on to build one of Britain’s most successful software companies. But her legacy reached far beyond business — dedicating the last three decades to philanthropy and giving away most of her personal wealth. Once the 11th richest woman in the UK, Steve is the only person to leave the Sunday Times Rich List because of generosity.

“When you have a crisis you can react in different ways — dissolve into pain, sorrow or suicidal thoughts, or respond in a positive way and make something worthwhile out of a bad situation. That’s what I’ve always tried to do.” – Dame Stephanie Shirley speaking on Crisis What Crisis?

The episode with Steve goes down as one of the finest conversations we’ve ever had. If you’d like to listen we’ve put a direct link in our bio.

I was lucky enough to see an astonishing play last night at — Good Night, Oscar. Aside from it being a cracking (and true) tale about the vagaries of 1950s Hollywood, it’s also a story of resilience in the face of mental health struggles. Sean Hayes (of Will and Grace fame) as the film star, pianist and wit Oscar Levant is extraordinary.

🏔 In the Swiss Alps, a mountaineering project is helping refugees find freedom and calm. For Peaks4All, the mountains are a space for healing ❤️‍🩹

🕵️‍♀️ Dame Stella Rimington shattered glass ceilings as the first female Director-General of MI5. Taking the helm during a time of global upheaval, she transformed the agency into a modern force.

🥊 Michael Watson, former British and Commonwealth boxing champion, was never meant to walk or talk again after a life-altering injury in the ring. But through sheer determination and years of rehab, he defied every expectation. In October, he is being awarded the Freedom of the City of London. So well deserved.

Three things on our Resilience Radar this week; moments, people, and stories that remind us of the power of the human spirit 🌱

1. Lucy Bronze brought it home. Throughout the Euros, she battled through every match with a fractured tibia - only stepping off the pitch during extra time in the final. A true warrior in every sense.

2. “At times, the pressure was intolerable”. After years of hard work, Richard Gadd faced overnight stratospheric success and a challenging lawsuit. A powerful reminder of resilience behind the spotlight.

3. This week we remember Niki Lauda. The man who was never expected to survive, let alone race again. But just 42 days after his near fatal crash, he was back on the track. A prime example of resolve and willpower.
