The Tree of Life – The Art of Holding On

At Kalaloch, on the edge of the Pacific in Olympic National Park, there is a miracle made of wood and salt air.

We call it the Tree of Life. 🌳

It’s a Sitka spruce, and at first glance, it shouldn't be standing. The ground beneath it has long since succumbed to the sea; a cavern has eroded away, leaving the tree suspended in mid-air. Its gnarled roots cling to the crumbling bluffs on either side, stretching across a void like straining tendons.

For me, this tree is more than a spectacle. It is a personal symbol of resilience—so much so that it inspired the name of my brand, Balancing Tree Press, and I carry its likeness in a tattoo on my back.

In the parks, we talk about 'protecting the resource,' but eventually, the resource begins to protect you. This tree is part of my internal geography, a constant reminder that I am built to endure.

The Witness 💛

Reaching the tree isn't a long trek, but it is an intentional one. You have to climb over massive drift logs—the "bones" of the forest washed up by the tide—to get to the base of the bluff. With the vast, restless Pacific at your back, you turn to face the cavern.

Inside the hollow, there is a small waterfall—just runoff, really—that is slowly, quietly making the cavern larger. It is the very thing that is taking the ground away, yet the tree remains.

The Feeling of Protection 🤗

When you step underneath those suspended roots and look up into the branches, the world changes. You feel surrounded. Protected. There is a profound sense of "Handling It." Despite the erosion, despite the void, the tree continues to reach for the light. I like to think the trees surrounding it are fueling it through the soil they still share, a silent network of support that keeps the "impossible" tree alive.

It isn't so much about a hike; it is a witness to the strength of staying rooted when the ground disappears.

Adjusting the Tempo: The Rhythm of Resilience ⏳

In our lives, we often face seasons of erosion. We feel the "ground" being pulled out from under us—be it through loss, stress, or change. Our internal tempo can become frantic as we try to find something solid to grab onto.

The Tree of Life teaches us a different rhythm: the slow, steady pull of the roots. Resilience isn’t about the ground staying still; it’s about the strength of your connection to what feeds you. Sometimes, holding on by the roots is enough. You don't need a mountain beneath you to keep reaching for the sky.

The Ranger’s Check-In 🧭

🌟What is your "Void"? Where in your life do you feel the ground has eroded?

🌟What are your "Roots"? What are the three things—values, people, or practices—that you are currently clinging to?

🌟Look Up: Step into the "cavern" of your current challenge. Can you see the canopy above you still reaching, still growing?

Find your peace. Stay rooted.

Peace and Love,
Anda

The Ranger’s Rhythm: Lessons on Regulation from the Land

The Architecture of Winter – Lessons from the Burying

In the winter of 2023, Yosemite didn’t just receive snow; it was reshaped by it. I lived in my RV, at the time, and I watched the world disappear. Eventually, there were eight feet of snow sitting on top of and around my home. I wasn't just staying in the woods; I was entombed by them.

The light changed first—a soft, blueish dimness that filtered through the drifts against the windows. Then the sound changed. Eight feet of snow is the world’s greatest insulator. The outside world—the wind, the distant plows, the trees cracking under the weight—all became a muffled, rhythmic heartbeat.

The Weight of Silence

Living under that much weight teaches you something about structural integrity—both of your home and your spirit. There is a fear that comes with being buried, a claustrophobia of the soul. But there is also a secondary lesson: Protection. The snow that threatened to crush the roof was also the very thing keeping the heat in. It was a cold blanket that provided a strange, silent sanctuary.

I had to learn to trust the architecture of my life to hold. I had to learn that being "sidelined" or "buried" by circumstances isn't the same as being erased. Sometimes, the land chooses to cover you so that you have no choice but to go inward.

The Witness

Looking back at that buried RV, I see a Ranger learning the rhythm of Submergence. We spend so much of our lives trying to stay above the surface, fighting to keep our heads clear. But nature has seasons where the only way through is to be under. To be still. To let the weight of the season insulate you while you wait for the light to change.

Adjusting the Tempo: The Rhythm of Insulation

When life feels "heavy"—when the bills, the transitions, and the hard decisions pile up like eight feet of Sierra snow—our instinct is to shovel as fast as we can. We panic at the dimming light.

Regulation is about Trusting the Shelter. Sometimes, the "weight" in your life is actually providing a container for your growth. It is forcing a quiet that you wouldn't otherwise choose. To find your rhythm, stop fighting the burial. Acknowledge the weight, breathe in the muffled quiet, and trust that your structure is strong enough to hold until the thaw. You aren't stuck; you are being insulated.

The Ranger’s Check-In

Check Your Roof: What is the "heavy" thing sitting on you right now? Instead of trying to move it, can you acknowledge that you are currently standing strong beneath it?

Listen to the Muffle: In the quiet of this "buried" moment, what is the one internal truth you can finally hear now that the outside noise is gone?

Look Up: Even under eight feet of snow, the sun is still there. You can't see it yet, but you can feel the blue light. Trust the light you can’t see.

Find your peace. Be the sanctuary.

Peace and Love,
Anda

The Art of Waiting – The High Desert Freeze

I remember waking up at Pipe Spring to a world that had turned into glass overnight. The red cliffs were capped with a thin, brilliant layer of snow, and the sagebrush was encased in ice. In the desert, winter isn’t a deep burial; it’s a pause. Everything stops. The water in the troughs freezes solid, the tourists disappear, and the land enters a state of profound waiting.

I found myself standing in that silence, looking at the horizon, waiting for the sun to climb high enough to melt the ice so the "real" work of the day could begin. And it hit me: I was wishing away the very stillness I had traveled across the country to find.

The Weight of the "Until"

We spend so much of our lives living in the "Until." We tell ourselves: Life will not begin again.....until the storm passes...until the doctor calls...until the bank account looks different...until the kids grow up.

We treat the waiting as a void—a waste of time to be endured or scrolled away. We let our security be undermined by the uncertainty of what comes next. But while we are waiting for the "Big Thing" to happen, the "Small Things" are happening all around us. In the desert freeze, if you only wait for the thaw, you miss the way the ice magnifies the red of the stone. You miss the incredible clarity of the air. You miss the life that is happening inside the wait.

The Witness

There is a specific kind of living that only happens in the in-betweens. It is a quieter, more observant life. When everything stops because we don't "know" the outcome yet, our senses actually sharpen. We have a choice: we can let the uncertainty freeze us in fear, or we can use the stillness to look closer at what is right in front of us.

⏳ Adjusting the Tempo: The Rhythm of Presence in the Wait

When your sense of security feels undermined, your nervous system wants to "skip ahead" to the resolution. It wants the answer, the Friday, the "Better Weather."
Regulation is about Occupying the In-Between. It is recognizing that the "waiting room" of your life is still a room you are living in.

To find your rhythm, stop treating today like a hallway to somewhere else. If you are waiting on a response, a job, or a change in the wind, take a breath and look at your hands. Look at the trees. Notice the "ice" on your own landscape. The uncertainty isn't a hole in your life; it is a season of its own.

🌲 The Ranger’s Check-In

Identify the "Until": What is the one thing you are currently waiting for that feels like it’s holding your life hostage?

Claim the In-Between: What is one beautiful thing happening today, in the middle of that wait, that you would miss if you were only looking at the horizon?

Look Up: The desert sun doesn't rush the thaw. It moves at its own ancient pace. Trust that you are allowed to move slowly, too.

Find your peace. Live in the wait.

Peace and Love,
Anda

The Ranger’s Rhythm: Lessons on Regulation from the Land

The Internal Permafrost – Standing at the Threshold

There is a season that doesn’t always make it onto the calendar. It’s the time between the deep freeze of winter and the certain bloom of spring. I call it the Internal Permafrost. It’s a time of erratic temperatures—warm one day, biting cold the next. The air is crisp, but the ground is unstable.

I am in that season now. My nervous system feels fried. My heart races, my breath catches in my throat, and the weight of hard decisions feels like a heavy pack on a steep trail. I feel the fragility of being human—the worries about security, money, and health swirling like a mountain mist that obscures the path.

The Signal in the Body As a Ranger, I was trained to read the signals of the land. Dehydrated soil, shifting clouds, the way the undergrowth reacts to a sudden frost. Now, I am learning to read the signals of my own body. The bloating, the lack of focus, the racing heart—these aren't failures; they are signals. They are the "holding cell" for the transition.

Just like the permafrost, this state is temporary. It is the messy, uncomfortable undergrowth that must exist to create the blooms of the coming spring.

The Power of the Witness The moment I stop fighting the feeling and start observing it, I become the Ranger again. When I look at my own fear with the same compassion I would give a stranded hiker or a struggling sapling, I reclaim my power. I realize that I am making decisions from a place of authenticity—doing exactly what I can do in this moment with exactly what I have.

When we are real with our fragility, we actually find our greatest strength. By breathing in the crisp air and connecting with the earth beneath me, I remember that I am not separate from the seasons. I am the season. And this, too, is part of the rhythm.

Adjusting the Tempo: The Rhythm of the Threshold

We often want to jump from the "Hard Decision" straight to the "Peaceful Result." We want to skip the muddy middle. But the middle is where the roots actually grow.

Regulation is about Befriending the Mud. When your heart is racing and your security feels threatened, you don't need to "fix" it immediately. You need to acknowledge it. Say to yourself: "My ground is thawing. It’s messy and I feel fragile, but I am still the steward of this land." To find your rhythm, give yourself permission to be "in-between." The spring at the coast is coming, but for today, the crisp air and the honest breath are enough.

The Ranger’s Check-In

Read the Signal: What is your body telling you right now? Don't try to change the signal; just acknowledge that it's being sent.

Identify the Permafrost: Where in your life are you currently "between seasons"? Can you allow that space to be messy without judging yourself for it?

Look Up: The sky doesn't panic when the clouds move in. It just holds the space until they pass. Be the sky today.

Find your peace. Let it thaw.

Peace and Love,

🌑 New Moon Field Report: The Silent Scout

This Capricorn New Moon is a cosmic reset button, but it’s a quiet one. Instead of "pushing" into the new year, I’m practicing the "pull."

In the gap between where I am and where I’m going, I’m leaning into the animal spirits of this cycle: 🦚 Peacock: Digesting experience to find the beauty within. 🦅 Hawk: Shifting between the small details and the 10,000-ft view. 🦢 Swan: Growing through effortless creativity and emotional flow. 🦌 Deer: Grounding in a calm, mothering intuition.

The Ranger Rhythm: Anxiety is just a signal flare that you’re in transition. You aren’t lost; you’re just on your way. 🐾
