Army Eyeing Replacement for M240B Machine Gun.

(U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Trenton Pallone). The Army is preparing to replace its long-serving M240B machine gun, launching a multibillion-dollar program to field a next-generation automatic weapon for frontline troops, according to newly released budget documents. Dubbed the Future Medium Machine Gun, or FMMG, the new weapon will mirror the M240B in function as a machine gun primarily for dismounted combat units. Service documents say it is intended to offer improved killing power and operational capability over the current platform, which has been in use since the 1970s.

US defense industry vulnerable to China, government watchdog warns.

The U.S. defense industrial base and all branches of the U.S. military depend heavily on materials produced by China to make and use critical weapon systems, creating national security risks, a government watchdog warned in a recent report. The Defense Department relies on a global network of over 200,000 suppliers for its weapon systems and military equipment and uses the Federal Procurement Data System database to flag materials and components originating from hostile countries. However, this database currently “provides limited information about the countries of origin,” a July 24 Government Accountability Office report found, and federal contractors are not currently contractually obligated to tell DOD where all of their manufacturing components originate from. Of over 99 materials total identified by DOD in shortfall for fiscal 2023, none were made in the U.S., GAO noted.

Germany buys aircraft self-defense systems from Elbit for $260 million.

Elbit Systems will supply its J-MUSIC suite, a directed infrared countermeasures system, to Airbus’s Defence and Space division for installation on German Air Force A400M transport aircraft in a $260 million deal, the Israeli company announced on July 28. The announcement stated that all systems will be supplied within 6 years, following a procurement decision by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Operations of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces. So-called Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) systems offer defenses against infrared-guided missiles, especially ground-launched ones. The announcement comes after Elbit Systems Deutschland received an order on Dec. 23, 2024, from Lufthansa Technik to equip the German government’s Airbus A350 aircraft with the J-MUSIC defense system.

Thailand and Cambodia still fighting after Trump announces ceasefire talks.

Cambodia and Thailand exchanged fire across their disputed border for a fourth day on Sunday, hours after US President Donald Trump announced the two Southeast Asian nations had agreed to ceasefire talks and threatened continued fighting would jeopardize their trade deals with Washington. At least 32 people have been killed and more than 200,000 displaced since Thursday, according to Thai and Cambodian officials, in clashes that have rumbled on despite calls from the United Nations, United States and China for the fighting to stop. Both sides have accused the other of starting the latest border flare-up, and traded blame for the ongoing fighting. Their leaders will meet in Malaysia on Monday to discuss the escalating conflict, according to Malaysia’s state news agency, citing the country’s foreign minister.

Türkiye unveils its 1st hypersonic missile at IDEF 2025

Türkiye unveiled its first hypersonic missile, the Tayfun Block-4, on Tuesday, as its maker, Roketsan, introduced six new advanced systems at the IDEF 2025 international defense fair in Istanbul. The Tayfun Block-4 ballistic missile is the hypersonic version of the Tayfun missile, Türkiye's longest-range indigenously produced ballistic missile.

The Tayfun Block-4 achieves long ranges, setting another record for the Turkish defense industry. Weighing over 7 tons, this new version of the Tayfun, with its multipurpose warhead, will be capable of destroying numerous strategic targets, such as air defense systems, command and control centers, military hangars and critical military facilities, from kilometers away, Roketsan said in a statement.

The Atmaca missile with the Akata capsule is the submarine-launched version of the Atmaca anti-ship missile currently in the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) inventory, which has a range of 250 kilometers (155 miles). Equipped with cutting-edge technology, Akata will strengthen the defense of the Blue Homeland with a range exceeding 250 kilometers and a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
