seoul national university researchers have redesigned an electrochemical reactor to better control the extreme differences in acidity and alkalinity that can develop around its electrodes.

this matters because these local ph changes can affect which chemical products are formed during an electrochemical reaction. by carefully controlling the reaction environment, the researchers were able to strongly favor the desired products.

under optimized conditions, the proportion of the targeted products increased from around 16% to as high as 97%. the production rate also increased substantially, making the process much more efficient.

the breakthrough could help improve electrochemical technologies used for producing valuable chemicals and fuels. it shows how controlling what happens at the microscopic level inside a reactor can make a huge difference in real-world performance. ⚡🧪🔬

in august 2025, the government of burkina faso ended the target malaria research project, a program that had been studying genetically modified mosquitoes as a possible tool against malaria. the project had operated in the country since 2012.

the decision came shortly after researchers carried out a controlled release of genetically modified male mosquitoes. authorities ordered the project’s facilities to be sealed and said the remaining mosquito samples would be destroyed.

the project was designed to explore genetic approaches to reducing populations of mosquitoes that spread malaria. it had received funding from the gates foundation, but the burkina faso government ultimately decided to terminate its activities nationwide.

however, burkina faso has not stopped fighting malaria. the country continues to run national prevention and elimination programs, with a 2026–2030 strategy focused on reducing infections and deaths.

about 3,000 years ago, ancient egyptians created an artificial big toe that was far more advanced than it might seem. known as the “cairo toe,” it was made from wood and leather and was found attached to the foot of a female mummy near luxor.

the toe dates to roughly 950–710 bce and was built in multiple sections that could move with the foot. researchers found signs of wear, suggesting it wasn't simply made for burial—it may actually have been used while the woman was alive.

scientists later created replicas and tested them with volunteers who were missing a big toe. the experiments showed that the design could be comfortable and could help with walking, especially when used with ancient-style sandals.

it's an incredible reminder that prosthetic technology isn't a modern invention. thousands of years ago, egyptian craftsmen were already designing artificial body parts with flexibility, comfort, and movement in mind. 🦶🇪🇬

in a quiet cemetery near pennsylvania’s blue mist road, two old headstones appear to lean toward each other, creating one of the area’s most unusual legends. locals have connected the stones with a story about two lovers who were separated in life but supposedly reunited in death.

according to the legend, the headstones slowly move closer together over time, as if the two lovers are still trying to share one final kiss. some versions of the story even claim that if the stones ever touch, something terrible could happen.

but the real explanation is much less mysterious. the stones genuinely tilt toward each other, but there is no evidence that they are actually moving because of anything supernatural. uneven ground, soil settling, weather, and the age of the cemetery can naturally cause old monuments to shift.

still, the sight is incredibly poetic. whether you believe the legend or not, two weathered stones leaning toward one another have become a powerful symbol of love, loss, and the stories people continue to tell long after someone is gone. ❤️🪦

this unusual-looking monkey is a bald uakari, a rare primate found in the amazon basin of brazil and neighboring countries. its bright red, hairless face and shaggy reddish-brown fur make it one of the most recognizable monkeys in south america.

the red color isn't makeup or a sign that the animal is sick. uakaris have very little pigment in their facial skin, allowing a dense network of blood vessels underneath to give the face its striking crimson appearance.

the image's “english monkey” nickname is also based on a real local name. the red bald-headed uakari is known in some parts of the region as “mono ingles” or “macaco inglês,” meaning “english monkey.” the name has been linked to local usage around the yavari river and is not the animal's standard english name.

nature has created some truly unforgettable faces, and the bald uakari is definitely one of them. its unusual appearance is a reminder of just how diverse—and sometimes surprising—the amazon rainforest can be. 🐒🌳❤️

after a father reached out for help, a company brought back a discontinued cup that had become a young child’s favorite. the simple gesture meant a lot to the family, especially because the child had become attached to the cup.

instead of simply replacing it with a newer product, the company listened to the customer’s story and found a way to recreate the discontinued design. it’s a small example of how businesses can make a real difference by paying attention to the people who use their products.

for a child, a favorite cup may seem like an ordinary object to adults, but familiar things can provide comfort and happiness. bringing it back showed that customer service can sometimes be about much more than making a sale.

sometimes, the most meaningful acts of kindness are surprisingly simple. ❤️🥤

development can improve lives, create jobs, and build stronger communities, but progress should not come at the expense of nature. forests, rivers, clean air, and wildlife are essential parts of a healthy future.

when forests are cleared or natural habitats are damaged, the effects can last for generations. biodiversity can decline, soil can degrade, and communities may face greater risks from pollution, flooding, and extreme weather.

the goal should not be to stop development—it should be to make development more sustainable. better planning, renewable energy, responsible construction, recycling, and protecting green spaces can help balance economic growth with environmental protection.

nature is not something separate from our lives. protecting it means protecting the resources and ecosystems that future generations will depend on. real progress is building a better future without destroying the world we need to live in. 🌳🌍

in haiti, a food known as bonbon tè is made from a type of clay, salt, and vegetable shortening, then shaped into flat cakes and dried in the sun. it has become strongly associated with poverty and food insecurity, especially in some of the country’s poorest communities.

for people facing severe hunger, these clay cakes have sometimes been used to quiet hunger pangs when regular food is unaffordable. the practice is also traditionally associated with pregnancy and digestive relief, although the supposed nutritional benefits are disputed.

however, clay cakes are not a healthy substitute for food. medical concerns can include constipation, dental problems, and exposure to contaminants depending on the material consumed. their existence is better understood as a sign of food insecurity than as an ordinary meal.

the story is a heartbreaking reminder that extreme poverty can force people to depend on whatever resources are available simply to get through the day. behind these unusual “cookies” is a much bigger story about hunger, inequality, and the need for reliable access to nutritious food. 💔🌍

naomi whitehead has reached an extraordinary milestone, celebrating her 116th birthday in september 2026. born on september 26, 1910, in x than a century of enormous changes—from the early days of automobiles and airplanes to smartphones, the internet, and modern medicine.

whitehead spent much of her early life on a farm, where she helped pick cotton and to***co. she later raised a family and became a great-great-great-grandmother. her family says she enjoys cooking, baking, drawing, listening to music, and sharing stories from her long life.

reaching 116 is incredibly rare. her story is more than just a remarkable age—it is a living connection to more than a century of history and generations of family. ❤️🎂👵

u.s. researchers are working on new materials that could help push extreme ultraviolet (euv) lithography to its next level. the goal is to create even smaller and more precise patterns on silicon wafers, allowing future chips to pack more transistors into the same amount of space.

one major focus is the photoresist—the extremely thin material that acts like an “ink” during chip patterning. researchers are exploring new chemistries that can withstand the demands of high-na euv while producing finer, cleaner patterns with fewer defects.

if these materials can be developed and scaled successfully, they could help enable smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient processors for ai systems, smartphones, data centers, and other advanced electronics. however, this is still research, and there is no guarantee of a specific chip-density improvement yet.

the bigger picture is exciting: as traditional chip scaling gets harder, breakthroughs in materials and manufacturing could become just as important as new transistor designs. the race toward denser, more powerful chips is increasingly happening at the atomic scale.
