One month to go 👀

On Friday 5 September, join us at Circomedia for a super special double header with innovative songwriters Âellin and Anna Ling.

Celebrating the respective releases of their long-awaited debut albums, both songwriters invite us into their distinctive sonic worlds, accompanied by genre-bending bands who transport their songs into another realm. Circomedia's swirling acoustic is the perfect setting to soak up the timeless folk melodies, intricate rhythms and rich vocal textures of these standout artists.

This is our fourth & final event supported by PRS Foundation's Early Career Promoter Fund and it's our biggest one yet - we would love to see loads of our community there as we come to the end of this useful development phase and start dreaming about the next year!

🌪 5 September: Cuculi x Circomedia ft. Âellin

We're thrilled to be hosting Âellin's long-awaited album launch at legendary Bristol venue Circomedia - part of a special full band double header with alt-folk songwriter Anna Ling .

A burgeoning musical force in the UK experimental folk scene, Magill’s songcraft is marked by a spirit of restless exploration and curious wonder. Drawing on literary influences and rich intertextual layers, the project evokes themes of collective memory, dream states, and the unconscious realm.

Expect an intricate blend of fingerstyle and jazz guitar, cello and violin strings grounded in the UK/Celtic folk and Hardanger traditions, double bass, deep sub-bass, beat-driven percussion, and an ever-shifting tapestry of augmented vocals and granular synthesis.

Tomorrow - we’re delighted to welcome Tamsin Elliott back to Cuculi Presents as she supports Kate Griffin Music & Matchume Zango in St Anne’s Church, Greenbank. She’ll be starting at 8pm, so come down when doors open at 7.30 to get a herbal tea and a good seat in time for her set!

Tamsin is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and film-maker with roots in the traditional dance tunes of the British Isles. Her debut solo album FREY established her as a rising star on the folk scene, with The Guardian praising her “beautiful, filmic compositions for accordion, harp, whistle and voice”. Her performances are always utterly hypnotic, finding a sweet spot between immense sonic detail and honest, unpretentious melodies that stay with you for weeks.

We were honoured to host the first UK performance of her collaboration with Tarek Elazhary back in 2023 as they were working on their glorious debut album, and we can’t wait to hear what she’s bringing us this time as a solo performer.

Two days to go! This Wednesday, we host the virtuosic cross-cultural delights of Kate Griffin & Matchume Zango in St Anne’s Church with support from folk composer Tamsin Elliott ✨

Headfirst Bristol recommend: “The fine folk at Cuculi bring you another left-of-trad cross-cultural delight, fusing Kate Griffin’s twanging banjo with the earthy timbres of Matchume Zango’s Mozambican timbila. In the late-Victorian, wood-beamed sanctuary of St Anne’s church, this’ll be simply stunning!”

Tickets still available for now, but we can’t promise to have any left by Wednesday… https://hdfst.uk/e128797

Big thanks to PRS Foundation for supporting this series with the Early Career Promoter Fund 🙌

Some news: our latest album ‘Quiet Light’ has been taken off Spotify as one of our tracks was seemingly added to a bot playlist without our consent.

While this is frustrating, it’s actually prompting us to pause and have a conversation about whether we want to have our music on there anyway. Spotify is a platform which exploits artists for profit and is increasingly using those profits to invest in AI weapons tech which, frankly, is in direct opposition to our personal, political and artistic values.

The album is very much still available on other streaming platforms (Tidal is a great option). Even better, you can *buy it* as a digital download or CD via on , which not only pays us a wage but also puts money back into the DIY community we’re part of.

We’re interested to hear thoughts from other artists & music lovers about whether you think it’s worth having music on Spotify at all as we’re not feeling very enthusiastic to put it back up. Is it time for a strike?

Cuculi x Circomedia | 5 Sept

First artist announcement: Anna Ling

Cuculi Presents a double header of two of the South West's most vibrant and sophisticated alt-folk artists in Circomedia's swirling acoustic.

Anna Ling’s music invites listeners into a world where intricate folk melodies, raw storytelling, and rich harmonies converge. Based in the wild landscapes of Devon, she has honed her craft across intimate and world-class venues and festivals alike, offering songs that find the universal in the everyday.

With a voice both delicate and commanding, Anna draws on the spirit of 1960s folk while weaving in a fresh, visceral edge, accompanied by klezmer-inflected clarinet, hot grounding electric bass grooves and percussion. Rooted in tradition but never bound by it, her live shows blur the line between performer and audience.

Tickets for the gig are on sale now, at three pricing levels:

General - £14
Community supporter - £17
Low income - £11

What an incredible evening we had with Lucy & Hazel and Claire Vine last week ✨

St Anne's was absolutely packed, and we were all spellbound from Claire's beautiful opening set right through to the final notes of Lucy & Hazel's rousing call to action. The whole evening was an amazing expression of creative & collective solidarity, with both acts bringing resonant political songs which which invited us to mourn, laugh and rage in community together. Big thanks to all the artists and the crew for making it happen.

Our next event in St Anne's is on 9 July, featuring a joyful cross-cultural collaboration from Kate Griffin & Matchume Zango, and support from local folk composer Tamsin Elliott. Tickets available now from Headfirst Bristol: hdfst.uk/e128797

Who are we?

Cuculi Records is a DIY label based in Bristol, UK. It’s a collective effort imagined by songwriters Bethany Roberts and Bec Garthwaite as a space to cultivate our own sound and release it independently.

After several years of writing, performing and recording with songwriters’ collective Hands of the Heron, it felt right to create a platform to share the effort and joy of releasing our music, alongside the solo projects and offshoot collaborations born from the band.

Within this creative cocoon, these songwriters and poets have found pathways to develop their craft. Come and listen.
